Passion of the Christ director Mel Gibson apologized Saturday for his resistant and unruly behavior, and for saying “despicable” things that he does “not believe to be true” when he was arrested in Malibu on a drunken-driving charge early Friday morning.

In a released statement, The Braveheart star did not specifically address claims that he made anti-Semitic remarks to Deputy Mee, as described on TMZ.com that posted several pages of the sheriff’s report.

The Lost Hills sheriff’s report, displayed on TMZ.com said Gibson had demanded to know if the deputy (Mee) was a Jew. During an “f-bomb” laced tirade, Gibson also said “the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.”

Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, declined to comment on the report, saying the department would disclose details of the arrest. “Nothing will be sanitized,” Mr. Whitmore said in a statement.

Mel’s bizarre tango with the law, and now public drunken tirade further vexed some who were a bit leery of Gibson’s perceived anti-Semitic message they saw in the blockbuster The Passion of the Christ, and who also were criticical of the actor for not squashing the inflamatory remarks made by his father about the Holocaust.

Gibson, who lives in Malibu, was arrested about 2:30 a.m. Friday on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and released on $5,000 bail.

In a statement issued Saturday through publicist, Alan Nierob, Gibson said:  “I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said, and I apologize to anyone I may have offended.”
Gibson also acknowledged an ongoing battle with alcoholism and said he was taking “necessary steps to ensure my return to health.”

Disney will be releasing Gibson’s upcoming film, “Apocalypto” in December, 2006.

Mel Gibson is the bravest man in America. The zionists jews accused him of anti-semitisim when he made a great movie about our prophet Jesus, and now they are accusing him again for saying the truth 'The jews are responsible for all the wars in the world'.

This is a hard story to make sense of without more information, some of which may be Gibson's own business. At least one newspaper, The Sunday Express, talks of a 15-year 'dry' period which the episode ended. What's the probability that somebody could totally abstain from booze for 15 years, yet still need alcohol-support groups and still have an overwhelmingly strong inclination to drink at the end of all that time ? I find it strange that the inclination has suddenly now been yielded to, but totally successfully resisted throughout the previous 15 years. Many people have intractable drink problems throughout their lives : the late George Best and Robert Newton come to mind. But they seldom managed 15 months, let alone 15 years, of sobriety. Mel Gibson deserves our sympathy and our prayers but none of us really knows what demons he has fought or how successfully over the last 15 years.

I am really disappointed in Gibson's behavior.
What is with the anti-Jew comments he made?
He offers advice and opinions as though we all
should do as he says. People like him think they
run the world and that therefore their
bad manners should not be publicized. From the
transcripts, it appears that all he was worried
about was bad press, nevermind endangering
every driver he came near that morning.
Shame on Mel.

Mel is a total a nut case; maybe he wasn't even acting in half his movies. Time for him to lay low and hope he can continue to find work.

Interesting how just a bit of alcohol can reveal the true nature of what a man thinks and is being....and then asks forgiveness....and of course totally forgot (alcohol-related, of course) that Christ forgave EVERYONE (including all Jews, hint-hint); so very interesting that the self-righteous Christians don't get it. The Muslims at least have somewhat of an excuse...they don't have Christ as their leader.

Just a drunkJul 30th, 2006 - 18:10:26

I've been sober for 7 years. When I was drinking and drunk, I would say and do many things that I did not really believe to be true.
I know just what was going on with Mel. The things he said are not what he really belives, that was booze talking. And that is the shame he has to carry.
I know what he's going through and it ain't easy. I wish him good luck, and hope he goes back to AA. Right now!! Not tomorrow, now Mel.

I'm Tired Of The Anti-Semitic Race CardJul 30th, 2006 - 20:38:13

Jews have been persecuted for thousands of years because of their intolerance. They believe that Israel is their land because the Old Testament says it is theirs. They wage wars on Arab nations because of their pride and prejudice. The New Testament says that unless Jews accept Jesus as the Son of God that they will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Jews don't accept Jesus as the Savior prophesied in the Old Testament. The honest truth is that Jews have brought much of the conflict onto themselves because of their inflexibility. Just because Mel Gibson wants to state his opinion doesn't make him Anti-Semitic. He is simply stating his beliefs. I am proud to proclaim Jesus as my Savior, but that doesn't make me Anti-Semitic.

Poor Old MelJul 31st, 2006 - 03:01:53

Let's look at this in the correct context. This guy's a multi-millionaire movie star/director who fell off the wagon. If the guy was that sh*# faced he was liable to rant all kinds of crazy stuff. So, Jewish people feel threatened by him? So what? The Jewish community has got such an inferiority complex at this point they are threatened by pretty much everything. If this had happenend to anyone else we never would have heard about it. So boo hoo, poor Mel has got to pull his sorry azs out of the fryer. Big freaking deal, I have bigger things to worry about: like paying my rent and getting up at the crack of dawn to go to a job I'd just as soon not go to. Poor bastard!

First, a question:

Is it really worth it to be hard on the comments of a man who was scientifically proven (sheriff's testing apparatus) under the influence of alcohol?

Just go a bar near you and rediscover (in case you've forgetten) what alcohol can do to a person, it makes the weak, strong; the quiet, noisy; the coward, brave; and virgins, pregnant the next day.

We ought to reserve judgement and be more responsible in saying things in the proper perspective and context lest we un

But Mel shouldn't have 'lapsed' into drinking that much. I agree that the apology isn't enough, and he should start to work now to stand up again.

As a recovering alcoholic with 25 years of sobriety I can tell you that any if us can drink again. However, BEFORE we do drink, it has been demonstrated that a series of thinking and behaviors.. as in EGO and GRANDIOSITY have taken over and are running our lives. If he had 15 years of sobriety, there was little I saw in the last few years that would demonstrate that.

I'm not the religious type and avoided Passion because of all the Religious Rights hype. But I did see and hear Mr. Gibson almost assuming a 'Jesus' like persona, and even disagreeing with his own religion as it being too liberal, etc. and he was going to bring it back to his Conservative Catholism. All of which screams that the ego has taken over and has put him in direct line for drinking. It was his arrogance, and pompous piety that I really disliked during all the Passion Hype.. and now, once again, we see the result!

When and if he gets into recovery.. one of the first things to maintaining that sobriety is smashing his Ego... if he is unable to do that (which doesn't look real good right now) as he's tiptoeing around the Judges trying to make amends to everyone. All that is a very superficial move to cover one's ass any drunk uses who gets caught. it's easy to see through it and just realizing the desperation there... and will be enough to reveal that 'role' no matter how good an actor he is.

I pray for all alcoholics out there who can't get sober... but, there is a solution and if he was in recovery...he knows it. He abandoned it...and chose to 'run' the World as Mel see's it... and thus I have no sympathy! It takes what it takes to get sober... maybe this is it for him.

I'd love to see this be the end of all his alcoholic related problems... he'd be a wonderful person - with a little humility and sobriety. However, he has a long way to go.
