Floyd Landis' dramatic comeback in the Tour de France could be in jeopardy.
According to CNN, the sport's world governing body has released results that show the American tested positive for "an unusual level of testosterone/epitestosterone" after stage 17 of the race last Thursday.
Landis made a reported incredible comeback in that Alpine stage, racing far ahead of the field for a solo win that moved him from eleventh to third in the overall standings. Landis then regained the leader's yellow jersey two days later, going on to win the Tour de France.
CNN reports that Landis will ask for an analysis of his backup "B" sample "to prove either that this result is coming from a natural process or that this is resulting from a mistake."
The team says it has suspended Landis, and if the second sample confirms the initial finding, he will be fired.
The news network reports that Landis failed to show up for one-day events today in Denmark and yesterday in the Netherlands, or release any statements to the press regarding the latest allegations.
