Oprah to Whoopi: You’re not invited to the Ball
By M&C News Jul 14, 2006, 1:19 GMT
Parade magazine readers have voted “overwhelmingly” in support of Whoopi Goldberg who was not invited to Oprah’s recent Legends Ball, honoring important black women.
According to Parade voters, Oprah was wrong to exclude Whoopi. The magazine asked its readers to weigh in on whether Whoopi should have been invited to the event, and a resounding 76% said “that Oprah was indeed wrong to exclude the actress-comedian from the weekend.”
Oprah Winfrey, 52, and Whoopi Goldberg, 50, worked together and achieved fame in 1985's "The Color Purple,” yet Oprah didn't include Whoopi in her year-in-the-making Legends Weekend, a celeb studded celebration of the “vanguard of African-American women” back in May, 2006.
Mariah Carey, Maya Angelou, Gladys Knight, Toni Morrison, Angela Bassett, Audra McDonald, and Brandy were all there among many others who celebrated over the weekend with a luncheon, a ball and a brunch.
Whoopi was not.
Both Winfrey and Goldberg have denied any issues that would have resulted in such a snub, but Goldberg's physical lack of presence was noticeable, especially when far lesser stars like Brandy, Mary J. Blige and Tyra Banks were toasted.

Maybe Oprah is secretly harboring resentment because Whoopi told Harpo to beat her.
god im starting to hate america more and more each day,
to much greed and people who are so much better that we middle class are.
Who died and elected Oprah as the keeper of the flock. She may have wealth, health and celebrity status; but she is not a barometer of our community. If you think that she is take a look at her audiance and to whom she bows. In fact i've not been a fan of her's since Will and Jada Pickett-Smith apeared on her show and she snubbed their child; ' stating that she didn't want children on the show that day.' She will undoubtedly be surpassed by those in the younger generation who pay homage to their roots. The French weren't impressed with her wealth when she showed up at a very promionent fashion house with no makeup and at closing. She was treated there like she tends to treat others she considers beneath her here. Anytime a celebrity of her status can research the demographics of a city to determine where the most economically supressed residents are; and give them fully furnished houses when the city in which she lives has some of the most deprived slums in America and is full of people who really need a chance to get out of their impoverished circumstances. Be it with education,a home, car, daycare center, low interest loans etc...I think that the tide is turning and more prominant African American women are moving to the forefront and forging their own path. Whoopi dosen't need Oprah to validate her status as Oprah is not the barometer of the economic success of our race. We control our own destiny and we don't need Oprah to validate that.
Hoo-ray for Oprah!
I am with mecq 100%. Oprah does not validate anybody. She is just a rich women who worked hard to get to where she is. Whoopi does not need to be invited to anything of Oprah's to be somebody.....She already is. Who needs her stupid invitations anyway? Oprah's invitations do not define anyone.
I recently watched the Legends Ball video and it was a beautiful gesture by Oprah to honor black female achievers.
Mind you, that the only reason she did this was because she snubbed Cicely Tyson after she was overlooked and not invited to a party she gave.
Tell Whoopi not to worry about it. She will probably get an invite to the next one. And if not, throw her own and invite Oprah!!! I am sure this is not the first party Whoopi was not invited to.
I didn't see Aretha Franklin either......
Oprah is a true attention grabber. She was losing focus with the black community and it was better for her to rub shoulders with the top echelon than to invite a working class black woman like myself to anything.
Working class people are legends too, Oprah.
Remember your roots.....
I could tell her some wonderful stories about my Grandmother and Mother...
Oh, I forgot, we may not be of her caliber to associate with.
All of those women you gave diamond earrings to already had some. I would love a pair.
Don't Worry Be Happy.
