Rosie O’Donnell and Star Jones Reynolds “race” rhetoric
By Stone Martindale Jul 10, 2006, 20:53 GMT
According to the Daily News, Star Jones Reynolds and Rosie O'Donnell say “they used to be friends.”
Daily News contributor Jawn Murray has pinpointed the moment the two divas became sworn enemies.
During Rosie's appearance on the May 12, 2004 show, the two combatants initially greeted each other warmly before the claws came out.
Rosie harshly mocked Star for her less than honest accounting of her staggering weight loss, started the conversation with a compliment. "You look fabulous!" Rosie gushed. "It's like 'Twinkle Twinkle Shrinking Star.'"
But the conversation quickly turned when O'Donnell suggested that women "stand up and scream" to protest Martha Stewart's felony conviction, and former prosecutor Star Jones Reynolds strongly objected.
Rosie: "Here's what I love. The black community said you cannot have O.J. Simpson, you cannot have Jayson …"
Star: "No, excuse me! … And if the black people had a vote, they did not tell me."
Rosie: "Honey! Honey, listen to what I'm saying. … The black community said you can't have the basketball player Jayson Williams, you can't have him. …"
Star: "There were two black people on the jury!"
Rosie: "Wait! Wait! Wait! I'm saying that as a culture, and I agree with it, black people have so few role models that they said, 'You know what? I don't care, you're not taking them!'"
Star: "What???! … When did the black vote have a meeting and vote?"
Rosie: "I didn't say you had a meeting, Star!" Transcript from the New York Daily News.
Star flamed O'Donnell the very next day: "Although the mainstream media may not collectively report on black role models, trust and believe there are plenty out there, and you don't need to rally behind O.J. Simpson. I mean, that was inappropriate." Barbara Walters tried and failed to get Star to apologize to Rosie.

someone SHOULD speak for you 'Yea'
Rosie is so distasteful and disrespectful, I feel soory for The View, this will lead to a fast downward demise of the show with Rosie's addition...I will never watch that show again...and I havent since Star left..
I just don't like this woman (Rosie), I just don't. Everything out of her mouth just seems negative and completely self-righteous.
The racial remark from Rosie was in bad taste. Barbara Walters should not have condoned it then or at any other time. To the best of my knowledge Rosie has no experience being black so how can she relate to anything black or know who is a role model. Who is she speaking for???
Rosie is a loud mouth with no brains. She needs to think before she speaks. That was absulutely distasteful and insulting to black people. We have the Bill cosby's and johnny cochrans (sp) of the world but Rozie can only see 2 black men!!!! What a shame.
I don't think any of you have even read Rosi's blog, it is not at all negative towards Star. It just states a personal view that Star could not have lost weight the way she(Star) said she did so quickly. Even Star has agreed that she misled everyone by her statement.
I think a few of you are missing the point and just taking an opportunity to bash Rosie O'Donnell at the same time. Star Jones had alienated her audience with her over-the-top wedding AND her dishonesty concerning her abrupt weight loss. Her departure from 'The View' had absolutely NOTHING to do with Rosie O'Donnell. Indeed, the quote above concerning O.J. Simpson is from 2004. Really? Star's recent departure from 'The View' is a result of an argument she had with Rosie in 2004? I don't think so... and neither does the majority of viewers. It's ironic that several of you Rosie bashers complain about what she said and yet here you are saying things even worse. Nice.
Of all the things in the O.J. trial that were insulting to the African-Americans in our society, it was the verdict. The published photos and (eye witness accounting by me) video clips of African-Americans grouped together for the listening of the verdict showed them cheering a murderer getting off. Why? Because it was a big 'up yours' to the police, city government and court system that had for years been abusing their communities and wrongfully imprisoning their citizens. So, good for their community - they let free a murderer. Does that make sense? By my standards, say it Rosie. And maybe Star could have looked at that for what it was.
Star was the most intelligent woman on the View, not just because she's a lawyer. Her job to me was to 'get the terminology right' and to keep the outrageous Joy and her 'views' in check. I'm not saying people were intimidated by Star, but she did carry a lot of star power...pun intended. Her off screen publicity and celebrity couldn't have hurt the show, maybe some were jealous.
I cannot stand Rosie - she is rude, blunt and dis-tasteful. I will not watch the view - Im on Star's side!!
Douglas Muirhead,
This article isn't about Jone's departure. This article is about events that could have possibly lead to the one-sided rift between the two celebrities. I think quite possibly you are the one missing the point here. What Rosie said was self-righteous and insulting to the black community. A leapord never changes its spots.
I Love Rosi, she makes my day with her funny humor and she just has fun.
