Star Jones Reynolds told she could lie about her departure by ABC

By Stone Martindale Jun 30, 2006, 18:59 GMT

More “View” boo-hoo.
Star Jones Reynolds told Larry King she was told she could "make up a story" about why she was leaving "The View" and her colleagues “would have gone along with it.”

The news that Reynolds wouldn't have her contract renewed for a 10th year on the daytime talk show hit the fan in a war of words involving show creator Barbara Walters.

Reynolds who discussed the situation on CNN's "Larry King Live," said she'd been told in April that she wasn't coming back but kept it secret. She revealed it on Tuesday's show, taking Walters and ABC by surprise with the timing.

The truth that Reynolds' ABC didn't want her back because her popularity was plummeting might never have been known without the public "outing" of the drama.

"They said you can make up a story," Reynolds said. "The audience didn't deserve for me to make up a story. That's not fair."

ABC icon Walters has confirmed the intended deception, but said it was done to “protect Reynolds' reputation and feelings.”

People magazine reports that “ABC fired Reynolds” immediately after Tuesday's show because her announcement, taking the network by surprise.

Walters told The Associated Press that she felt betrayed and ABC said it couldn't trust Reynolds to tell the truth if she remained on the air.

Andy, what you’ve just written is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. At no point in your rambling, incoherent comment were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this forum is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Andy, you didn't have to put it that way, but in some sense what you're saying is true. Barbara Walter's is disliked among her peers because of her egotistical and phony nature and Star Jones became too full of herself and thought she was the 'star' of the show and ignored the fact that she was just a side kick. Obviously her ego got the best of her. Typical.

Giving ousted employees the opportunity to give their own version of a story is something that happens all over the country. How many execs do we see 'resign to spend more time with family' instead of being 'fired'. Give me a break. Star Jones was just using this as an opportunity for publicity and self-promotion. The same thing she did with her wedding and subsequent weight loss.

Race Matters | Department of the Unattended Bag

Count on Steve to kick me into finally doing this post. Let me express love for him…

Anyway- sigh. The alternate title for this post is “A Mutt Speaks” and I have to offer a slightly different take on this issue. As a Mutt, I guess I feel compelled to answer some of the assertions in Steve’s post. Note: I’ve not yet read the comments there yet.

Here’s the difficult passage:

She was also attracted by the idea of a donor of another race. “I believe in multiculturalism,” she said. “I would probably choose somebody with a darker skin color so I don’t have to slather sunblock on my kid all the time. I want it to be a healthy mix. You know how mixed dogs are always the nicest and the friendliest and the healthiest? If you get a clear race, they have all the problems. Mutts are always the friendly ones, the intelligent ones, the ones who don’t bark and have a good character. I want a mutt.” Her African-American friends questioned this strategy, suggesting that her child’s life would be harder if he or she was perceived as nonwhite, but Daniela said: “If that’s what I believe, I have to go by that. And it might help the world also if more people are doing it that way.”

I remember my undergrad workshop days, in which a gay man explain the absurdity of “choosing” to be gay: “Do you think I’d choose to suffer this kind of discrimination?” It’s an angry response, and justified in its own way. Similarly, I think a lot of people of color would choose to be pink, blue eyed and blonde, in more depressed moments. Which happen a lot in today’s Amurka; racism is “fashionable” again.

That said, gosh I’m tired of talking about “race.” Really. I’m in my 30s, and I’m already just sick and fucking tired of blathering on and on about it. Flame away, race-addicts, I mean it and I don’t care what you think. I have to live in this absurd middle space in this country, because other people can’t get over their own nonsense about this silly construction known as “race.” I promise you, I’m not the one making it an issue every time I buy a pack of cigarettes, go to a club with my friends, or apply for a job.

So this woman wants to have a caramel-colored baby. So the Jewess wants to have a Nazi-fantasy child. So the Negress wants to smooth her daughter’s passage into womanhood with slightly less challenging hair. Is that too ugly for you? Should I moderate my tone? I say: let’s all just try to get over it, ok? Let’s let go of the hurt, and deprive mere words of their power. Let’s focus on policies and discourses which will have a real impact on the majority, which is to say, let’s recognize it’s a class war and that the “race war” is a fake one. Ahem, Bandar Bush, ahem.

As progressives, we can take comfort that we’re the smarter ones, most of the time. This country has failed, miserably, to integrate its populations of color into the proper economic and political echelons, mainly due to racism. But let me state plainly that the Civil Rights movement of decades past is dead, and today’s political landscape requires different solutions. Or: we have to build new coalitions, create new languages and establish different dialogues. I speak as someone who has great respect for the accomplishments of past leaders, and who at the same time is really critical of what many of the groups with whom they are associated are doing now. Integration, literally and figuratively, are what is required at this time/political juncture.

When I talk to friends of different races, the stories really do sound all the same. “My mother-in-law hates me because I’m not (fill in religion, race, class, education, location of origin).” Perhaps it’s because I feel no strong investment in “identity,” but sometimes I wonder why people get so upset over various ideological constructs relating to race. Then again, I feel the same way about religion, and I suppose that makes me different from 95% of the world’s population. But from my “mutt’s” perspective, the obsession with race seems often silly to the point of making me want to cry.

I grok Steve’s anger. Just as I understand the anger of a white friend of mine, who is fond of asking me, “why don’t you recognize your white heritage more, why don’t you call yourself ‘white’ too?” I say the same thing to both of them: let’s all just try to let it go. Is this “unrealistic?” Does it improperly take into account all the arguments, which require us to pay attention to the role race plays in our day-to-day lives? Would it contribute to the negative conditions of people of some races?

Honestly, at this point, I don’t think so.

The German woman sounds like my German friends, so innocent and naive about American racism. She doesn’t mean any harm, and in fact is trying to “do good.” And fuck- if choice isn’t about buying the sperm you want at the insemination clinic, I don’t know what is! (!!!) So let’s all just butt out and mind our own family’s business, ok? Yes, the overall tone of the article Steve posts reads like “people of color don’t like themselves, nice white women on the other hand are (foolishly) trying to make the world a better place by offering up their sacred White Wombs.” But it also kind of warms my heart. I really hope and pray that 500 years from now, people will look back at this time and wonder what the hell we were all so upset over. Future people who are all various shades of brown.

Steve says:

She’s not buying a dog, she’s going to have a black child in America. There may be biracial people, but they get treated as non-white. I can’t say what’s more horrifying, the woman who wants an Aryan child or the one who wants a “mutt” and ignoring her horrified but tactful African-American friends.

Is this a self-hating thing? “Horrified by tactful?” I don’t believe that her friends were arguing that there is something inherently inferior about black and brown people, right? So perhaps they were just testing her commitment- making sure she was cognizant of the challenges she’d be facing. Which honestly, aren’t so bad. Yes, I perplex people, and when they’re rude, it’s the first question out of their mouths when they meet me, “What are you?” People in all the groups that comprise my racial heritage often treat me as if they know something about what my hue “must mean.” I disabuse people of that really quickly. It’s really just not a big deal, and akin to learning to be taller than most people, or having a birthmark. If you think otherwise, you have the problem.

Short version: talking about race, in this political climate, will get us nowhere. It’s time to accept that we’ve reached a kind of impasse, and the old languages and perceptions aren’t going to help us anymore. Howard Dean “gets it.” My poor, white, Klan-attending brother in the South is getting as screwed as hard as I am. We need to communicate. Rather than castigate him for loving his “Southern Heritage,” it’s time for me to figure out a way to convince him not that the Klan is racist, but that it’s keeping him down. (Obviously, I’m talking about poor people here, not Trent Lott.) When enough of us realize that being poor and oppressed has nothing to do with race and everything about an Establishment that acts only for itself, we’ll make some progress.

Let’s save our anger, our fire, for causes that matter. Let’s take the first step, and learn to really listen to each other, with fresh eyes that see only rainbows. Let’s stop giving the fascists more power over us, and learn to not take hurt at words. I know it sounds very kumbaya, but it’s such a simple truth. Race is only a word, an idea. You can not believe in it any time you choose.

Because in Bush’s America, we’re all niggers now

I read an article in 'Newsweek' recentlyabout an African American doctor, who said that she is often hurt by the comments of those who come to the ER and ask her to send in the doctor. She said that she is comforted by a quote made famous by Malcolm X and that I will paraphrase: A black person with a Ph. D is still a nigger in the eyes of white racist. Star was is a very intelligent, well-educated person. I am not a fan of hers, but she was treated as if she had been suffered at that damn View tabled and not sororized. All of those women are catty and bitchy and annoying--hell, even Barbara. She is no more than they, especially that opportunistic wench from 'Survivor.' Babs and ABC reminded Star that she is merely a nigger in their eyes, and, if nothing else, whether we will admit it or not, all successful African Americans had better keep that in mind. The white power structure does not respect anything non-white or non-riche. I am not at all surprised that Star was treated the way she was, and she shouldn't be either, she, like the aforementioned doctor, and most black folks have been given the speech by sage relatives and kin, which included the warning: 'They will turn on you in a minute--no matter what you do or what you become, to them, you are still a nigger.' This has saved me from much disappointment and heartbreak. Star was caught slippin.' She will know better next time, and her ordeal is re-educating many. Now, this nigger is off to attend to her patients, who might insist that she has merely come to empty a bedpan. All in the life of one of us.

I liked Star being a host on 'The View'. I honestly think the main reason she was leaving the show is because of Rosie O'Donnell starting as a host in September. Star was not supposed to come out with this 'top secret' news when she did but when did she ever take orders? That woman is very head strong and if she wanted to say it she would and she did! I am not speaking down about her whatsoever but just stating a fact about Star's personality. Personally, I would not have minded if they had gotten rid of Elizabeth instead. She is a goofy squeaky sounding woman that never really fit in on that show. I love Rosie O'donnell but whether or not she will fit on 'The View' is hard to say. I guess time will tell once she gets on there. Good luck to Star anyway.

I think the termination of Star Jones was the wrong choice for the view. I'm not a Star Jones fan, however, I like how she bring on the heat in the hot topics. Without MV and Star, the only bright spot is Joy. Are we forgetting that the show is about women from different backgrounds and opinions. What happen to a diverse group of women. What you have left is 3 white women representing 3 different generations. Oh, I forgot, Joy is Italian. If you think how the view bosses handled this situation was correct, then you need to walk a mile in Star's shoes. Can you imagine having to show up to work everyday in front of an audience and pretend everything is OK. Smiling and happy. To top it off, you're told your contract is not being renewed one day and they hire the person that insulted you publicly the same day. Attend the Emmy Awards and have to sit there and watch your 'mentor' announce it to millions of your fans. Do you really think Barbara and the ABC high uppers had Star's best interest at heart. If you do, you are very naive. 'THEY DIDN'T WANT TO PISS OFF STAR'S FAN BASE!!' Contrary to what many of you think, Star Jones has fans. The View will soon find out. Frankly, I think the show has been lousy for the last 5 years. I have always held MS. Walters in high regard. However, I lost a fingernail of respect for her on Wednesday's show. I think Barbara owed it to Star to tell her the truth. Not send word to her agent. Barbara must have forgotten how she felt when she was treated so badly on the evening news by men who didn't respect her intelligence and ability. Star deserved to be told the truth. I think they should have terminated Star in April. Oh no, they were losing MV so they had to come up with a way to 'USE' Star until they could get Rosie. Star could have waited until Thursday, but, soon or later the tabloids would have printed the truth. There were already leaks. So, I wish Star all the best. As for her weight. Folks, get over it. That's her business. As for her husband being gay. Folks, get over it. That's her business!!!!! As for Star, folks get over it, she will be back on top again. She's a diva to the core. If you think she's a bitch, that's ok, she's a damn good one!!!

I think it just seems funny that while Star was overweight and unattatched the other co hosts were fine with her. Then she lost the weight and got married and all of a sudden they can't stand her. It may just be a case of jealousy if you ask me. Oh and what is all this talk about her wedding. I don't think she should appologize for anything she did for her wedding. What celebrety doesn't have an outlandish wedding? She waited 40 years for a celebration like that. I say more power to her! If someone would have offered to pay for my wedding I would have done the same as she did. Anyone would have. And as for Rosie O. I just want to know how long it took for her to tell the truth to her fans about her being gay??? People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!! I think that the show is going to go down hill. I think it will have a trashy tone to it now with Rosie on it. By the way what happened to Rosies talk show heah?
I think what ABC and Barbara did to Star was wrong. I am not really even a fan of Stars but I do feel for her. I think that ABC and Babs should be ashamed for trying to pass a lie off to the viewers. If Star would have done things their way we viewers would have gone on to think that everything was peachy at the view set and nothing could be further from the truth. The other hosts would have turned on the water works I am sure of that and it all would have been a lie! I give Star credit for going out the way she did. If you ask me Star did leave the show with dignity and that is more than I can say for Babs!

ABC became they own worst enemy, by firing Star Jones the day after her announcemet. Her decision to announce her departure two days ahead of schedule was made with dignity and tact. It would have been announced in two days anyway. If ABC would have left it at that, there would not be the attention given to the 'deceptions' that ABC and Barbara Walters attempted to carry out. new news: 'Had you asked then which would last longer--her job or her marriage--we think most would have assumed the former. After Star lost the weight, Walters decided to replace her former ''Bama Mammy' with a younger 'Glammy' -the same hair, but half the brains. Rosie is no prize either.

Ironically, Barbara used a TV career to elevate herself as Star has done. Walters demanded $12 million a year from a so-called 'news' organization that sucked the wage standard out of 20/20's younger staff so they were forced to room with 5 people per apartment, or live in Far Rockaway, NY. Barbara Walters' outfits cost $10,000 apiece and only Heaven knows how much her annual facelifts cost. How about asking Barbara how many Black people she's worked with over the years at 20/20?

Yeah, Star's made her mistakes and probably needed to leave. Yet do you recall the classic 20/20 test on children which showed how groups (blue eyes) will banish the lone one who looks different (brown eyes)?

So Star decided to end the torture and announce a little early-- Big Deal!! Still, Queen Barbara had to add pain to our lives by staring into the camera and blasting the proverbial, 'Off With Her Head!!' Bitch, Please!

Star at first fit an acceptable stereotype-- a fat loud-ass obnoxious black woman -- and then she changed her appearance and tried to capitalize on her celebrity- Oops! Her bad!! Before this incident I had never heard of 'The View' or 'Star Jones'? I of course knew who Barbara Walters was but my recollection was more from Saturday Night Live than any 'news' she ever reported on. This has all been a clever publicity stunt that apparently has worked. It has introduced me to several celebrities, a TV show and a Hollywood scandal; all of which I 'could give a rats ***' about. I am disillusioned by how many people are sucked up by this drivel when so many far more important issues are at hand. And yes - by writing this, I am participating in the drivel myself. Every since Tuesday I've been reading all the comments regarding Star Jones Reynolds' announcement about not returning to 'The View.' And this is what I have to say: I'm glad that Star outted Barbara Walters and all the people at ABC who wanted her to lie about why she was leaving. Star's mistake was trusting that any of those people had her best interest at heart. As another commentor stated, 'never trust them.' And them are 'white people' who think once you feel good about yourself and your life that you are too big for your britches. So many white people will NEVER and I do mean NEVER allow people of color to get but so far in their organizations. As soon as you think you've reached the top, they will inevitably pull you back down. And, to think, that Rosie O'donnell has anything to say about Star's life. Rosie lives a life of perversion so how can she ever speak truth about anything. The View, by hiring her will lose a large audience. People are not interested in hearing about perverse lifestyles these days. Barbara Walters is the one who shouldn't be trusted. Telling Star to make up a story. Is that the same thing as lying? People always want the Black Girl to tell a lie to save face. Star, yes, you made some mistakes, but you are not the only one. Now, I see they are talking about bringing Brandy on. I hope Brandy seeks wise counsel before she allows herself to be used by ABC, Barbara Walters, and the likes as an affront to Star. That how white supremacy has always been able to separate the community--use one against the other. We all have to watch our backs when dealing with white people. They are not our friends and NEVER will be. Let's not forget!

FYI, I am a 60+ year old black female; and I have admired Ms. Walters since I was an under graduate, marching with the best for civil rights for all people. My learned wisdom, and experience affords me an ability to completely understand what Ms. Reynolds means when she spoke of her genuine respect and admiration for Ms. Walters.

More to the point, my experience has taught me that all Americans can watch the same show and come to totally different view points, based on established values along racial lines.

Since I am employed, I do not watch the view regularly and I have no first hand knowledge of any of the women hosting 'The View'. However, recently--it has appeared to me that Ms. Reynolds was less engaging than the other women in this setting. My reasons for this opinion are:

* the earlier enthusiasm and laughter Ms, Reynolds exhibited when the
show began was no longer obvious... and second

* it appeared that she felt a need to read comments verbatim and demonstrated less spontaneity

In other words, her total behavior seemed guarded; and with recent events, it is made clear and understandable. However, I believed that the manner in which Ms. Reynolds interviewed with Mr. King was totally professional, business like and in complete control of her comments. More important, her comments did not appeared to be rehearsed or guarded. In spite of Mr. Kings unlimited attempts to restate remarks, I believe, in an effort to belittle Ms. Reynolds' action and elevate Ms. Walters confessed doubled standard was not allowed (i.e. King would repeatedly restate Reynolds remarks and Reynolds...'no I said...'). Further, if Ms. Walters or her producers had any doubts regarding Ms. Reynolds abilities, they just got 'a rude awakening'.

I believe Ms. Reynolds has also serve to ensure 'The Larry King Show' (TLKS) for another season. The night he was privileged to interview Ms. Reynolds gave him viewers he has never had and will never have again. He is too afraid to ask the tuff questions (except w/ Ms. Reynolds), or have a thought that has not been preprogrammed. This show (TLKS) is the second most wasted hour on television. Just my opinion...but thank you for accepting my comments in the spirit given.

I genuinely wish the women of the 'The View', Mr. King and certainly Ms. Reynolds God's Blessings upon their efforts, as they enjoy this walk of life.
