'Pirates' star Johnny Depp disappoints fans kept waiting, but for a “very good reason”
By M&C News Jun 27, 2006, 19:30 GMT
Disney's head of publicity Dennis Rice, issued a statement regarding the snafu with radio and television press who were kept waiting for five+ hours on the red carpet - never getting to interview the “Pirates” star, Johnny Depp.
“I had big fallout with the press and I’m prepared to deal with it today,” Rice was quoted saying.
Disney was not prepared for the “overwhelming number of fans who bought tickets to the park to see their favorite stars arrive for Saturday's premiere.” According to the Los Angeles Times.
“We knew Johnny Depp had a huge fan base but we were simply not prepared for the number of fans who showed up,” Rice admitted. "And for Johnny, it’s all about the fans."
According to the Los Angeles Times article and Disneyland sources, “five thousand fans camped out Friday night outside the park in order to get in at 6:30 a.m. to stake out spots on the carpet so they could see – and possibly shake hands with - the ‘Pirates’ star.”
“Unlike some stars, Johnny Depp is very appreciative of and loyal to his fans and he always makes time for them at his public appearances,” says a Depp spokesperson. “They all know this and that's why they show up in droves. He started signing autographs for fans in the front of the park around 6:45 and spent two hours doing it. He didn’t even do his first interview with ET until 8:45.”
The two hours of “devotion to his fans up front” left zero time for the others lining the carpet further inside the park-and the long waiting reporters further down the line “who were not told until after 9 p.m. that Depp would not have time to talk.” According to the Times report.
Depp had “an even fuller plate on Saturday than most people knew. He arrived at the park at noon with his family to do press photos on the updated Pirates of the Caribbean ride…then, according to inside sources, he spent several hours on a ‘personal obligation’ that was actually an unpublicized lengthy meeting with several children with life-threatening illnesses, whose dream was to meet the actor.” According to the Times. Depp's publicist Robin Baum confirmed the report.
“Depp has worked with the ‘Make-A-Wish’ Foundation since his days on the TV series "21 Jump Street."

That headline is misleading. He didn't disappoint fans. He may have disappointed some media outlets because he spent so much time trying to sign things for his fans, but to say 'Depp disappoints fans' is ridiculous. The guy, more than any other big star I know, ALWAYS gives shout outs to fans above anyone else.
no...it's really not.
i was there, the fans and press people were waiting inside the park and never got to meet, speak or see him because of the delay...which WAS for a VERY good reason
the headline is dead on
&Depp looks like a great guy and kind hearted person in it-he had a good reason to be delayed apparently
Johnny Depp deserves all the adulation he is getting and although he appreciates it he has no ego at all and does not seek fame or attention. This man is on the right track on life and everything else. There has never been another quite like him and there will never be another to equal him.
my fan is johnny depp and he is so like totally cool
he deserves all the attention he gets always

i was at disneyland that day, i waited all day to see him, but i knew there was a chance i wouldn't get to see him. Johnny Depp is very devoted to his fans, and as one of his fans i really love the fact that he tried his best to get to all of his fans. He's one guy, and there are a bizillion fans. Sure, us, who were at the end of the red carpet, were a little upset that all he did was wave to us as he was being dragged away, but hey, a big celeb like Johnny can't be late to his own premiere!!! We still LOVE u Captain Jack Sparrow, i mean Johnny!! ;)
I never even heard about this, until I just read it on the website. I think that's great that Johnny Depp cares so much about his fans. I have loved him since I was a pre-teen, on Twenty-One Jumpstreet. It's good to know that years of fame and notariaty hasn't turned him into an unappricaitive jerk, like so many other celebrities you hear of.
A wonderful man and I wonderful actor, just now being appreciated by the rest of the world. Long overdue.

it's so nice to know that such a huge star like Johnny knows where his priorities lie. i'm very confident that if the Disney people didn't usher him forcefully, he would've loved to just stay with his fans. and the fact that he'd rather keep the 'meeting/lunch' a secret, is very admirable.
