Reese Witherspoon sues Star magazine, 'I'm not pregnant!'

By Stone Martindale Jun 22, 2006, 14:01 GMT

Published on the web, documents filed by attorneys for actress Reese Witherspoon in Los Angeles superior court, claim the magazine "Star" published a false story that she was pregnant "in a callous effort to boost the tabloid's sagging sales." According to TMZ.com.

"Contrary to the fabricated Cover Story," the lawsuit says, "the true facts are that [Reese] is not pregnant, does not have a 'baby bump' and has not otherwise gained weight such that she has had to resort to wearing 'Empire-waist dresses,' 'baggy clothing,' or an 'old-fashioned 1920's bathing suit.'

In the TMZ article, Reese alleges in the suit that "this fabricated tall tale was brazenly published as a prominent and conspicuous cover story for the purpose of garnering the maximum attention to the tabloid."  The court papers can be seen on this page.

Reese's attorneys claim the Star story "was a violation of Reese's privacy and portrays her in a false light."   No monetary damages have been disclosed.

Reese Not Pregnant!?Jun 22nd, 2006 - 15:23:56

Reese Witherspoon isn't pregnant? My world is shattered! I was hoping she and Ryan would spawn another fabulous child. I am not sure I will ever get over this blow. Next thing you know Paris Hilton will wear a turteneck! What else! Dogs sleeping with cats??

Kill me now, I can't live another minute knowing she's not pregnant. What are we going to do?? People who spend their lives wrapped up in this stuff are a sad side of the human race. Live your own lives people!

It may just be me, but I was under the impression that the veracity of anything in Star was questionable at best. How can Star hurt somebody's career?

I say we let Reece and some female exec at the Star get naked, and fight it out in prime time... that's what will boost the Stars rating... and Reeces career too.

Reece is a wonderful person and actress. While there is nothing at all wrong with the idea that she is pregnant, it could affect her consideration for multi-million dollar film contracts that require a non-pregnant female lead over the next six to twelve months. Tabloids are renowned for being personally invasive and publicly abrasive, and I am disappointed they would not honor the career of one who makes them so much money by at least being factual. I don't know whether she is concerned about losing work, or more importantly, opportunities to shine and share her gifts with the world, but I do think she has a right to stave off these public offenders. We love you Reece!

Good for herJun 22nd, 2006 - 20:32:41

Other comments posted ignore the reality of the situation: This worthless paper with nothing better to do fabricates a story about a major celebrity. They brazenly write whatever they want, knowing for the most part that celebrities do not have the time to get involved in lawsuits. I applaud Ms. Witherspoon and hope she is awarded a huge amount of damages, enough to put this trash rag out of business. It is mind-boggling to me that these newspapers will go to any lengths to make money off celebrities. I say we turn the tables on these horrible publications and make a reality show where undercover agents track down dirt on the evil people who create these 'magazines,' as well as fabricate juicy stories about their most intimate secrets. Let their lives be splayed open for all to feast their eyes on and we'll see how quickly they attack the next celebrity without a single verified fact. Good on you, Reese.

that's wrong!!Jun 22nd, 2006 - 20:58:08

First of all they have no reason to do that! So what if their sales are going down thay still have no reason. If I were her i would sue too because they would be invading my privacy. That also would be discremanation. So that is my opinion! and that is what I have to say! OK??!

Tabloid papers have always been sleazy gossip rags, so slandering Reese's name is no new development. On the other hand, I hope Reese's lawsuit is a success which encourages other actresses to go after the other sleazy gossip rags.
