George Clooney, Section Eight Production company and Warner Bros. studios can rejoice. The plagiarism lawsuit filed against them by screenwriter Stephanie Vergniault in a French court is officially dismissed.
Vergniault claimed "Syriana" "was largely plagiarized from her script" according to reports filed by Ireland Online.
"Stephanie Vergniault had claimed the oil-industry thriller borrowed 'very largely' from a script she completed in 2002, but the judge in the case said two scripts were "obviously different." according to the Ireland Online report.
The Judge overseeing the court case reviewed the two scripts, and deemed the overlap of storylines "coincidental." The court also cited "lack of sufficient proof" by Vergniault trying to establish chain of ownership of her screenplay. Vergniault had claimed to send her script to a Canadian company tied to Warner Bros. According to the Ireland Online report, Vergniault is required by the French courts to pay all parties legal fees.
