Celebrity can be used for good and evil, but "Elle Driver" aka Hannah, the villainous character in Tarantino's " Kill Bill "sagas, has erred on the side of "good".
The forcible evictions of squatting urban farmers in South Central Los Angeles have a notable ally. According to the Los Angeles Times, "Daryl Hannah this Tuesday morning demonstrated her solidarity with the squatters by scaling a tree during the raid and refusing to come down until she finished her tree-top interview alerting the world to her presence at the protest."
The Times reports that Hannah "said she was sleeping in her tent when the Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies arrived. [Protest organizer John] Quigley alerted her to the raid, and she raced up the tree in about a minute.
"I felt an extreme sense of urgency. Not only did I have to climb up the tree, I had to pull up the rope behind me so they could not follow me," Hannah said in a cell-phone interview with The Times from atop the tree."
She vowed to stay up there until deputies forced her down.
The local Fox and CBS affiliates in Los Angeles are currently reporting police wearing riot gear moving into an urban Los Angeles community garden today (Tuesday) to evict Hannah, along with other campaigners trying to save it from destruction.
According the news sources, "At least 25 immigrant farmers and their supporters were arrested on trespass charges, police said, but Hannah remained perched 40 feet up a walnut tree in the 14-acre (5.7-hectare) fruit and vegetable garden in gritty south Los Angeles."
