David Gilmour's charity appeal
Jun 8, 2006, 15:15 GMT
Former Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour has urged wealthy celebrities to get more involved with charity work.
The 60-year-old rocker - who donated £3.5 million to a housing charity in 2003 after selling one of his properties - hopes other rich stars will follow his example.
He said: 'The reason I am going public with this is to try to encourage fellow celebrities and those with similar wealth to start getting involved with projects like this.' Gilmour would be prepared to encourage more stars to get involved with charity projects but doesn't know enough of the really wealthy artists to convince them to donate their time and money. He told Britain's Daily Express newspaper: 'There was a great tradition of philanthropy in this country that has fallen by the wayside. The problem is that people I meet who could make massive donations aren't great friends. They usually appear fleetingly at showbiz parties. My friends tend to be normal people who live locally.'Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
