Father of Tiger Woods dead at age 74

Washington - Earl Woods, the father and mentor to the world's most famous and charismatic golf athlete, passed away early Wednesday, Tiger Woods announced on his website.
'My dad was my best friend and greatest role model, and I will miss him deeply,' Tiger Woods wrote. 'I wouldn't be where I am today without him, and I'm honoured to continue his legacy of sharing and caring.'
The master golfer said he was 'overwhelmed' when he thought of 'all of the great things' his father had accomplished in his life.
'He was an amazing dad, coach, mentor, soldier, husband and friend,' he wrote.
Woods, who was 74, was credited with putting a golf club into Tiger's hands even as a young toddler. He died of cancer, news reports said.
