Czech explosives-maker defuses legal row with Madonna
Apr 11, 2006, 11:39 GMT
Prague - Pop star Madonna need not fear the wrath of a Czech explosives manufacturer that threatened to sue her for naming a new company Semtex Girls.
A Prague newspaper Tuesday said officials at Explosia, which makes industrial blasting supplies including the explosive Semtex, have decided to drop plans for a trademark lawsuit against the Material Girl.
'In our opinion, this use of the Semtex title falls into the category of publicity gimmick,' Ladislav Lehky, director of a Czech trade group that includes Explosia, told the daily Mlada fronta Dnes.
Semtex is a plastic explosive known as a terrorists' favourite. The American singer recently launched a London-based company called Semtex Girls Ltd., using the name without Explosia's permission.
Before dropping the case, Explosia's lawyers were preparing a lawsuit that claimed Madonna violated a trademark worth 130 million koruna (5.6 million dollars).
