Pop star Stewart ordered to pay damages to US casino

Las Vegas, Nevada - British rockstar Rod Stewart must pay a Las Vegas casino 3 million dollars for a cancelled concert appearance, a city judge ruled Monday.
Stewart was ordered to pay back the Rio Hotel Casino for a performance he was meant to give on December 30, 2000, according to the website of local television station KVBC.
A jury had already sided with the casino in September on its claim for 2 million dollars in damages for breach of contract, leaving the judge to impose a further 1 million in interest.
Stewart, 61, testified in court that a recent thyroid operation had prevented him from singing and that he offered to make up the performance at a later date. But the casino was intent on getting its money back, Stewart testified.
