'Fat cat in the snow' Bono defend methods
Jan 26, 2006, 19:55 GMT
Davos - Irish rock star Bono on Thursday launched a robust defence to the allegations that businesses and politicians may have 'used him' in the course of his campaigning to end poverty and HIV/AIDS in Africa.
'I've been used before - it's part of my job to be used - but I'm not a cheap date, as I've explained to some dodgy politicians down the years,' he said at a press conference at The World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos.
'There is a tsunami of AIDS deaths in Africa every month, yet we're fighting a fire with a watering can,' he said. 'Solving the African situation is worth the risk of a rock star getting egg on his face.'
Bono was in Davos to launch a new brand - Product RED - that will see major companies like Gap and Armani provide products and give a percentage of the proceeds to charity.
However, the rock star admitted he was uncomfortable with his high-powered surroundings.
'I'm here with the fat cats in the snow, and I'm one myself,' he said. 'You're supposed to feel like a winner here, but in truth I feel like a loser because we're losing the war against AIDS.'
The singer said that had long expected a larger backlash from the press after years of images of 'a rock star posing beside dying Africans.'
