Robbie Williams wins libel damages over 'gay' claim

London - British popstar Robbie Williams Tuesday won 'substantial libel damages' over claims that he was secretly homosexual, the High Court in London said. Stories appearing in a number of tabloid newspapers, and a celebrity magazine, alleged in 2004 that Williams had engaged in casual homosexual sex. The publications' owners now accepted the stories were untrue and had agreed undisclosed damages, the court heard. Williams, 31, was not present at the hearing in London's High Court about the previously little-known allegations. His counsel, Tom Shields, told the court: 'Mr Williams is not, and has never been, homosexual.' The People said in August 2004 that Williams was about to deceive the public with the publication of a book, 'Feel', that would say he only had sex with women. © dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
