Robert Blake found guilty in civil process - huge cash award

Los Angeles - Less than a year after a jury found actor Robert Blake not guilty of murder in a criminal case, a California jury Friday found just the opposite - that he in fact caused the 2001 death of his wife. Friday's judgement came in a civil case brought by the four children of the murdered Bonny Lee Bakely. The court ordered Blake to pay 30 million dollars damages to her survivors, E! Online reported. The four children charged that Blake hated his wife and killed her so that he could raise their daughter Rosie alone. The street-smart detective star of the TV cop show 'Baretta' was acquitted in March of criminal charges that he murdered his wife in 2001 while she sat in their car after they had eaten at a restaurant. But while the jurors in the criminal case have strict criteria to find someone guilty 'beyond a reasonable doubt', such standards do not hold in civil cases. The Blake case is similar to the civil judgement against one-time football and film star O.J. Simpson, who was acquitted of double murder of his former wife and friend. But in 1997, the survivors of the murdered couple won a judgement of 33.5 million dollars in a civil case that found him guilty of the murders. © dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
