Sarandon's bruising belly dancing

Susan Sarandon suffered a freak back injury - while belly dancing.
The 59-year-old actress injured herself while she was practising the erotic dance moves for her new film 'Bernard and Doris', in which she plays tobacco billionairness Doris Duke whose favourite pastime was belly dancing.
Sarandon claims she really enjoyed learning the exotic art but has now had to give it up after she was left writhing in agony after twisting her lower back trying out an ambitious move. She revealed: 'It's wonderful, very liberating, but I threw myself into it a bit too much. I did something one night to my back and that was the end of it. I was in such pain. I'm such a type A personality that I did it with such a vengeance that I almost crippled myself.' However, the 'Thelma and Louise' star insists belly dancing is great way to keep in shape and hasn't ruled out taking it up again when she recovers from her injury. She added: 'It's a marvellous way to keep supple. We'd do it at our home in New York, and all my friends would take part, as well as my lovely housekeeper.'Copyright 2005 BANG Media International
