'Star Trek' star George Takei - best known as Mr Sulu - has confessed he is gay.
The 68-year-old actor, who starred in three series of the cult sci-fi show and six 'Star Trek' movies, has come out to Los Angeles gay magazine Frontiers.
Takei, who joined the long-running show in 1966, revealed he has been in a relationship with partner Brad Altman for 18 years.
The actor says he grew up feeling ashamed of his sexuality, but now feels confident that society will accept him.
He told Associated Press: "The world has changed from when I was a young teen feeling ashamed for being gay. The issue of gay marriage is now a political issue. That would have been unthinkable when I was young."
Takei also explained his latest role, playing "very contained but turbulently frustrated" psychologist in the play 'Equus', helped him make the decision to go public with his sexuality.
