David Beckham targeted by animal rights activists over boots
Aug 15, 2005, 14:37 GMT
David Beckham is being targeted by animal rights activists for wearing football boots made of kangaroo skin.
Violent terror groups have sworn revenge on the England captain who has been forced to increase the security at his homes in Hertfordshire and Madrid to protect himself and his family.
Animal rights group Viva! claim that baby kangaroos are being slaughtered to make football boots, including Adidas Predators which Beckham endorses.
Now the Real Madrid and England player, 30, has been warned more extreme organisations, such as the Animal Liberation Front, could set their sights on him.
The extreme group have carried out firebomb raids in the past and favour tactics such as planting bombs under cars, sending letter bombs, pouring red paint over stars who wear fur and dumping animal carcasses on their doorsteps.
A spokesperson for Viva! said: "Most people don't realise that many of the most popular boots are made from kangaroo leather.
"It's appalling that the kangaroo, an icon of Australia, is being treated so shamefully."
Beckham said he will consider the evidence supplied by Viva! but his stance on the killing of kangaroos is guided by Adidas.
Adidas meanwhile insist they are opposed to kangaroos being killed in "an inhumane or unnecessarily cruel manner."

I understand where Luci is coming from. I am from the south central United States (Arkansas and Oklahoma) where deer are overpopulated and they are becoming a threat to motorists and even carrying diseases harmful to humans. Unfortunately, hunting them to control their numbers is becoming taboo. I would much rather see their numbers controlled while giving us the benifit of a unique food and clothing material.
If left to nature, yes, their numbers would be controlled. However, nature is not nearly as dynamic in it's contol as we can be. When animals such as deer (or kangaroo) are overpopulated, the first sign is a weakening of individuals due to starvation. This is then followed by diseases which can drastically reduce their numbers, allowing the remaining population to recover. But before it does, it can inflict nearly unimaginable suffering upon the animals.
Some would probably argue that we should feed such animals in order to reduce the risk of starvation. However, this would only lead to exponential population growth and overcrowding which, even if the animals are well fed, will still cause disease.
What I am getting at is that the population of animals must be controlled by humans. The death of relatively few over time could potentially save an entire species. I believe that this, even from a religious point of view, is what is meant by humans being created by God to tend to his creations.

What a Joke!!
The Yanks have no idea.
Come to Australia, drive an hour from any city and see how you like it when one of these pests bounces in front of your car and puts your family at risk. They are big and strong and if you hit one, you and your car will come off second best!
Kangaroos are everywhere!! The red Kangaroo is a major problem in the state of Queensland and they aim to cull 30% of the wild population each year.
It’s difficult to fence them in as they jump. They breed out of control and travel in packs. They eat farmer’s crops and trample the land.
We have legal culls here. They are shot and killed humanely. I’ve never heard of anyone clubbing babies or treating them inhumanely like these hippies are claiming.
We love our Kangaroos but they are out of control.
Sure there are a few species that are endangered but the chance of finding one of them let alone accidentally killing one on a cull is rare. It’s not like the tree kangaroo is hanging out with the packs of big Reds waiting to get accidentally shot.
They are farmed for their meat and their Hyde, the leather is very popular with the Italians for motorcycle leathers, and is a flourishing export industry for Aussie farmers.
I personally don’t like the meat it is so dark and rich and high in iron it tastes like bleeding gums...grose!!
With very little fat content I think it’s a bit tough too. But there are plenty of people that love it.
Farming kangaroos is a lot more environmentally friendly for Australia than farming cattle.
So I don't know where these misinformed enviros get off!!
Bring back the Roo, Adidas!!
