Brooks slams Cruise in article
Jul 1, 2005, 18:14 GMT
New York - Actress Brooke Shields has slammed Tom Cruise's criticism of her use of anti-depressants, saying in an article on the New York Times op-ed pages that she felt forced to speak out "for the hundreds of thousands of women who have suffered from postpartum depression".
The article followed several interviews in which Cruise, a follower of Scientology, dismissed psychiatry as "junk science", claimed that there was no such thing as a "chemical imbalance" in the brain and argued that depression could be treated by exercise and vitamins.
But Shields, who chronicled her post-delivery blues in a book "Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression", said that Cruise's comments "are a disservice to mothers everywhere".
"To suggest that I was wrong to take drugs to deal with my depression, and that instead I should have taken vitamins and exercised shows an utter lack of understanding about postpartum depression and childbirth in general."
"Once we admit that postpartum is a serious medical condition, then the treatment becomes more available and socially acceptable," she wrote. "With a doctor's care, I have since tapered off the medication, but without it, I wouldn't have become the loving parent I am today."

Let me guess time traveler.....you are a MAN who knows NOTHING about post partum depression. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. When you sprout breasts, get pregnant and have a baby, get back to me. Until then, please just do us all a favor and SHUT THE HELL UP about something you could never personally experience. Oh yeah, what's your take on Andrea Yates?
People, including (especially children) who have a high suicide rate- actually, become healthy enough (which sounds bizzare) when taking Antidepressants, that they become well enough to commit suicide. When they were severely depressed they did not have it in them to commit suicide.
A person on meds needs to be monitored. When a teen is severely depressed, they do not have the energy to actually go through with their thoughts. Teens have alot of emotions, pressure and hormones going on. It is very unfortunate that when they come out of depression they still have the desire to not be here. Wheather it is because they are unhappy or broke up with someone or what ever is in their mind. Until you, them, us have any idea what depression is- which is not automatically suicide, you should not judge.
WHen a teen is very depressed, they do not even have the energy to commit suicide. Go to school, get out of bed. So a child should be watched.
I know a lot on this thread are not going to agree........... however, I can not change anyones mind, my opinion and what I learned and know
However, in Brookes book she said over and over she did not want to harm her child or herself it was just thoughts she kept having. However, when the meds kicked in she felt better.
Re: Your article on Tom Cruise/ Brook Shields disagreement over use of drugs:
Tom Cruise is right, Brook Shields is wrong.
There is actually no proven science that states that depression is a chemical imbalance. If people would research instead of be willing to accept the 'quick fix' drugs which only mask the symptoms, life for all would be of better quality.
How did I find this out? I had three children myself. Then, I worked with children and women, and not in twenty years have I found that diet, vitamins and minerals, and excercise didn't work INSTEAD of the pharmaceutical money-makers. That's twenty years of success.
We can't 'Say No to Drugs' and then advocate them at the slightest cause when non-drug methods are much superior.

News flash - the 'Say No To Drugs' campaign is for ILLEGAL drugs. What the hell planet are you from? Let me guess.....RL Hubbard's planet. Also, Shields specifically stated she suffered from POST-PARTUM depression, not just plain old depression...and you are trying to tell us that no chemical imbalance exists after childbirth? Give us all a f***ing break. You are 100% lying if you have supposedly recommended vitamins, exercise, etc. for 20 years and it has ALWAYS worked. What a load of BS. I guess all YOUR clients were Scientologists.
Time traveler: Take Paxil for a few months then try going off it cold turkey. They don't tell you to taper down from those 'sugar pills' for nothing.
