New York - An auction of the personal property of Hollywood legend Marlon Brando netted 2.4 million dollars Thursday, including a record 312,800 dollars for the actor's annotated film script of the movie "The Godfather", according to Christie's auction house.
The script had been estimated to net just 10,000 to 15,000 dollars. But a saleroom packed with over 500 bidders saw the manuscript beat the previous world record for a film script the 244,500 dollars paid in 1996 for Clark Gable's "Gone With The Wind" script.
Another "Godfather" highlight, the letter from author Mario Puzo asking Brando to consider the role of Don Corleone, fetched 132,000 dollars.
Other sale highlights included a photograph of Marlon Brando and Rita Moreno which realized 48,000 dollars, and a transcript of a telegram from Brando to Marilyn Monroe after her nervous breakdown in 1961 which made 36,000 dollars.
Helen Bailey, head of popular arts at Christie's New York, said the auction was "a fitting tribute to arguably the world's greatest film actor and a 20th century icon."
