We adore the outspoken pop queen Katy Perry, who is rumored to be bringing her BFF Rihanna into the half-time show for the Super Bowl.
Perry weathered a tough public split with Russell Brand and has not looked back. Did you know that she also shares that she wears the same outfit every day, so the paparazzi’s pictures of her won’t sell?
In this week’s Billboard cover story (on newsstands Monday 2/2) Katy Perry opens up about everything from her upcoming Super Bowl performance (on Sunday 2/1), to her social media feud with Taylor Swift, to creating her own world in her LA compound, as it is too “hard to go into the other world sometimes” (please see full quotes below).
On Performing at the Super Bowl:
Katy: “Everyone has been asking me if I’m going to be nervous before the halftime show. I’m like, I’m…human. This is the biggest event of my career.”
“There isn’t any selling point that’s going up the day after. What I’m selling is just my music to the broadest, widest audience ever.”
“I want the show to be quintessential Katy. It’s like the exclamation point on the whole last cycle. This is the cherry on top to everything I’ve already done.”
On Creating Her Own World in her “Compound”:
Katy: “I’ve always dreamed of living commune style. I want my own Neverland ranch at some point, but not with the salacious parts.”
“[My dream] is a Starbucks on the property. I have to create my own world because it’s hard to go into the other world sometimes. Barbara Streisand has a mall downstairs in her basement — just weird, amazing stuff like that. I get it, because it becomes such a thing to go out in the world.”
On “Not Playing the Picture Game” with the Paparazzi:
Katy: “If I wear the same thing every day, the pictures don’t sell.”
On Her Social Media Feud with Taylor Swift:
Katy: ”If somebody is trying to defame my character, you’re going to hear about it.”
* In a Rolling Stone interview, Taylor Swift talked about being “straight-up enemies” with another wildly successful female pop star whom she declined to name. Everyone in the know pointed to Katy Perry.
Here’s what Taylor Swift said when questioned about the mysterious subject of her new track “Bad Blood”:
“For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not,” she says. “She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?'” Then last year, the other star crossed a line. “She did something so horrible,” Swift says. “I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies.’ And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And I’m surprisingly non-confrontational – you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So now I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.”
(Pressed, Swift admits there might have been a personal element to the conflict. “But I don’t think there would be any personal problem if she weren’t competitive,” she says.)
Here’s what Katy Perry tweeted the day after Rolling Stone’s profile appeared online.
then this tweet didn’t help, from Perry’s then beau Diplo:
On Being Cautious with Relationships:
Katy: “There is no handbook. In all my relationships, I’ve learned how I have to be more careful and that it’s not up for public consumption.”
