Musician and county music lion Merle Haggard, responsible for the unique "Bakersfield Sound" that tips its hat to his California hometown, has undergone the removal of a cancerous growth in his right lung.
Merle is reportedly recuperating from the surgery and doing better and better each day, according to his publicist Tresa Redburn.

Haggard's wife Theresa posted thanks on his website to all his fans who have expressed love and support. She writes, "I would like to personally thank all of you who took the time to send your love, support, care, concern, and most of all, all of your prayers."
Redburn told Monsters and Critics this morning that Merle is currently resting and recovering from lung surgery in a Bakersfield hospital.
"It was discovered during a biopsy that he had non-small cell lung cancer, which has a far better cure rate than the small (oat) cell cancer. The doctors believe they have removed it all and tests are still ongoing. One pathologist that reviewed the biopsy noted that very often surgery cures this form of the disease."
"Mr. Haggard and his family are respectfully asking for privacy at this time."
"Your prayers and good thoughts would be very much appreciated," added Redburn.
