epa01169802 An institutional TV grab shows Spain's King Juan Carlos shouting 'Shut up!' to Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez (R) EPA/-Spain's Socialist Party insist the monarch was right to tell Chavez to "shut-up" at the Ibero-American Summit in Chile on Saturday (10.11.07) after the president branded former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar a "fascist".Diego Lopez Garrido, spokesman for the Socialist Party, made clear that while Spain are keen to retain good relations with Latin American countries they are not willing to accept any disrespect shown to any Spanish citizens.Speaking at a news conference yesterday (12.11.07), he said: "This is a fundamental, democratic principle, one that governs relations between countries."Spain's Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos reiterated the sentiment that Spain would endeavour to keep good relations with Venezuela "on the condition that we are respected".He said: "I don't believe it should affect relations with Venezuela. We want to have good relations with everyone, but always with respect for institutions. If we are not shown respect, we must react."At the Ibero-American Summit, Chavez accused Aznar - a close friend of US President George Bush - of backing a 2002 coup against him, before adding: "Fascists are not human a snake is more human."The socialist leader then proceeded to interrupt current Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero when he tried to defend his colleague, prompting the king to say: "Why don't you shut up?"On Sunday (11.11.07), the president said he hoped the dispute would not "damage relations" between the countries but added he found the king's actions "imprudent".He said: "I hope this will not damage relations. Why was chavez even there? but, talk about the pot calling kettle black -chavez is the true fascist! [Anzar was a true democrat. he was popularly elected] much like hitler was in some parts of Germany, chavez is popular in Venezuela. he merely exploits the oil wealth to keep the masses there happy.
