Beckham and his wife may find L.A. less like a diamond and more like a rotting fish in the moonlight. As for the future of Soccer/football in the US. Forget it. In 5 years La Crosse will have fully replaced Soccer in the hearts and minds of America's fickle youth. Soccer will remain a world Sport, albiet one with no real hold on the hearts of Americans. And as a staunch foe of Soccer, I couldn't hope for more.

Hopefully before the Beckham's become the next big payday for Scientology they will read the book,'Piece of Blue Sky' written by Jon Atack who was involved in Scientology for almost a decade. The God I beleieve in isn't short of cash!If they do get involved in Scientology I predict this will overshadow Mr.Beckham's involvement in his soccer/movie carreer, which will result in half empty stadium's and movie theatre's.I think soccer will have a spike in interest with all the money being pumped into the hype machine(the $250 mil's got to come from somewhere!)but American's are just not that excited about soccer no matter how much a bunch of corporate suit's tell us we should be.As far as Mr.Beckham being the next movie action hero,he's about a quart low on charisma! When I saw an interviewer ask him the other day about his $250 mil. deal to come to the U.S. he acted about as excited as he found out that he had a real bad rash!

Let's face it -- Scientology is everywhere. Nothing stops it. The secret to all this is interesting, and many don't seem to know it. Those that do, well... you see it in Berlin, London, Taiwan, South Africa, Nigeria, Mexico, Russia, Latvia -- 163 countries, 71 languages. People find out Hubbard's methods work. That's the secret. His technologies work. So while the gossip mongers and media talking heads might slam it, Scientologist just continue. Provide workable knowledge that people find helpful. They tell their friends. Their friends tell their friends, and so on! See two sites: www.cchr.org and www.able.org.

Gus,
Take the time to research this 'religion' and you'll understand. Their 'secret' papers are freely available on the Internet.

It's not just that they are a bunch of nuts that believe they are infested with the souls of space beings that were blown up by nuclear weapons while tied to Earth's volcanos millions of years ago. All that would be fine. It's even fine that their founder (a sci-fi writer, imagine that) basically admitted the whole deal was a scam to get rich.

Unfortunately, they insist on practicing good old cult traditions like alledgedly intimidating and even murdering people who try to leave them, taking all of their followers assetts, attempting to infiltrate the US govt, black-mailing the IRS into a clearly illegal secret settlement where their fee-for-service payments to the 'church' are tax free, virtual slavery for lower level (read less rich) members, etc.

Before you feel too sorry for them, they are actually (appropriately) banned as a cult in much of Europe.

Hopefully, these two are a bit smarter then the average LA residents and stear clear of these losers.

Yes, LA is lovely - when you are in an airplane looking at all the bright lights! However, when you are on the ground, you realize that you on simply on an overcrowded desert city that is not spectacular at all. If the Beckhams are expecting to find some kind of paradise in LA, they will be sorely disappointed. Why leave Eourope for LA?

They will also be disappointed when they figure out the Tom & Katie are not their new best friends, but are recruiters for Scientology. If the Beckhams are going to start up with Scientology, they might as well set up the direct deposit with their bank now because that's where all their money will be going.

I wish I could tell the Beckhams one thing: Scientology is like a haunted house - very scary - but you don't have to stay - you can get the F out and run for your life!

Actually, as nearly as I can tell, Scientology *doesn't* work. At least, as far as anyone can actually tell. The best that can be said for it is that its verifiable claims have never been properly tested, under strictly controlled conditions in front of skeptical witnesses. Scientology likes to make claims about its 'scientific basis', but there is more to being scientific than just saying something is. Science has tight, stringent rules and conditions to be met, and any group as paranoically secretive as the 'Church' of Scientology will simply never submit itself to such scrutiny. It can't afford to; its utter phoniness would be exposed in jig time.

'Religions' or cults such as Scientology inevitably run into problems when they start making claims that can be verified. For example, the book Dianetics makes the claim that anyone 'cleared' has perfect recall - but no Scientologist or 'clear' has ever successfully demonstrated such in public. Attempts to do so were spectacular, hilarous, embarrassing failures in front of scores of witnesses and well documented. I bet most clears can't even memorize the text of BATTLEFIELD EARTH, no matter how many times they dig through that turgid space opera.

Besides, virtually all mainstream religions - Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Mormon, etc. - put their texts in the public domain, where anyone can read them, write about them, debate them and think about them independently. Any faith that cannot let you read their ideas for free is automatically deeply suspect. Scientology viciously persecutes anyone who criticizes them, or writes about them in a negative light. They certainly don't want you thinking about anything they tell you. It has been repeatedly compared with Amway in this respect. Frankly, both Amway and Scientology worship money, and money only - 'Money Moonies'.

Why SHOULD people be tolerant of beliefs that are not grounded in science, but in superstition? Why should we even be tolerant of Christian beliefs? They are pure anti-scientific nonsense. We can tolerate human beings, and accept that they simply have mental disorders that allow them to believe things irrationally. No one here is saying Tom Cruise doesn't deserve human rights, and a tolerance of his very existence. We're simply saying, scientology is just another wacko religious belief, that is arguably even wackier than religions like Christianity. If Cruise chooses to believe something ridiculous, then he chooses to be the butt of jokes and ridicule.

Whether it is in sports or the performing arts, the American likes flash more than anything. So, soccer's future here is not about the game ultimately. The story will sell the sport. In the US there is capital enough to lure more than just Beckham -- for instance, Luis Figo right about now is thinking less about kicking a ball next fall in Saudi Arabia and more about kicking himself or his reps, to the curb. If Becks turns out to be the first wave, in a few years time the Galaxy or some other squad could be playing for the World Club Championship. And, as they do all the time in the EU, with a little creative genealogy quite a few high pedigree internationals from places like Wales, Ukraine, or Iceland might suddenly discover a long lost grandsire with American citizenship and voila, they could be playing for the US in the World Cup.

interesting factual info:

Lawrence D. Wollersheim is an ex-Scientologist. He brought a case against the Church of Scientology in 1980. In the course of this case, the story of Xenu came to public light.

Wollersheim joined Scientology in 1969, signing the Sea Org's 'billion-year' contract to serve the church. Wollersheim claimed to have been held captive in the hold of a ship docked off California for 18 hours a day, what he called a 'thought reform gulag'. He was also denied necessary medical treatment, as per the Church's policies. [1]

Wollersheim was compelled to abandon his wife and his family through the policy of disconnection. Finally, when Wollersheim was able to leave the Church, it subjected him to financial ruin through its policy of 'Fair Game'. In their appeal, The Church of Scientology asserted that 'Fair Game' was a 'core practice of Scientology', and therefore protected as 'religious expression'. This was also stated by Scientology attorneys in the case against Gerald Armstrong, in 1984, by religious expert Dr. Frank Flinn. [2]

In 1986, a jury awarded Wollersheim $5 million in compensatory damages and $25 million to punish the church for what jurors called intentional and negligent 'infliction of emotional distress.' On appeal, however, this was reduced to $2.5 million. Scientology officials vowed never to pay, and the phrase 'not one thin dime for Wollersheim,' was chanted by Scientologists at court hearings. [3]

After over 20 years of legal battling, the Church finally agreed to settle the case and pay out an $8.7 million settlement on May 9, 2002. [1]

The money that the Church of Scientology deposited with the court clerk was divided among a number of various attorney of Wollersheim that made claims against the funds. According to Larry Wollersheim, as of May, 2005, there was less than $2.3 million left in the account and there was still an ongoing claim by attorney Leta Schlosser for $2.7 million against the fund. Wollersheim claims he had not received any of the funds from the case.[2] On October 28, 2005 it was reported in the Los Angeles daily legal publication, the Metropolitan News-Enterprise, that the Wollersheim case was still ongoing and a trial was forthcoming regarding the Leta Schlosser matter. It reported that Schlosser had already received $100,000, but she was suing for much more.[3] On December 8, 2006, it reported that Wollersheim had won the case on appeal, because Schlosser lacks an enforceable lien because she did not comply the Rules of Professional Conduct. What's very telling and ironic, is that Isaac Hayes quit South Park over their 'intolerance' of his religion, yet he was happy to profit from letting South Park make fun of almost any other religion, race, creed, or sexuality on the planet.

I didn't say that people could not or should not adopt belief systems that can't be scientifically proven. Martin Gardner says he follows the 'credo consolans' - if it does no harm, and makes one feel better, that's fine, and I wholeheartedly agree. True religious thought is based on faith - literally, it's unprovable and you're willingly buying 'a pig in a poke'. Proof denies faith - if you need proof, you don't have the kind of faith most religions request.

But the key issue is, how does one define harm? Charging thousands of dollars for demonstrable nonsense - that's harmful. Persecuting critics - that's harmful. Hounding people who try to leave is harmful. Cult behavior in general is harmful, and a few minutes of research on the web will define cult behavior in unmistakable terms. Scientology exhibits a disturbing number of traits consistent with cult behvior in general.

Christianity (to pick one example) in general is not harmful. But Jim Jones's version was. So was the Inquisition. To say that Christianity isn't harmful does not excuse these behaviors.

When a religion makes claims that CAN BE TESTED, they should be. If they fail the tests, that ought to say something about that religion in general. These tests need to be done the same way as any other scientific research - no anectodal evidence, double-blind testing, skeptical witnesses, control groups, the whole nine yards. Scientology in particular makes itself vulnerable to this sort of thing since they go out of their way to claim their 'scientifically tested' beliefs. They are the ones who want to play in the Science sandbox; they have to play by Science's set of rules.

Believe me, I understand mental illness; I had an older brother who was a full blown paranoid schizophrenic. I've seen it up close and personal, a lot uglier than most folks ever do or want to. I never stated that Tom Cruise and the other Scientolosers, or mentally ill people in general, should be denied human rights. But they don't have the right to harm other people either, and people DO have the right to be warned of seductive-sounding dangers.

I think the LA Galaxy's real intent is a to use Beckham to launch American Soccer into the International Limelight. Think about the business proposition. The US is the only country who doesn't seem to give a rats about soccer, but with an international celebrity like Becks that opens all sort of doors from high rolling betters, commercial inversors, advertisements. Not since Michael Jordan has America had such a huge star athlete and if soccer is the route to do it in, so be it. And Michael Jordan's reign was in basketball which many countries knew about, but were not big fans of. Soccer is a major sport in about 90% of the world. Beijing olympics will happen in 2008 and what happens two years after that? WORLD CUP! LA Galaxy is thinking globally, and they need all the practice they can get if they want an American soccer team to win. So $250 million, hopefully, may be worth the investment.

As for Tom Cruise and the Scientology bit, obviously, there's very much a business angle in that too as well as the so-called 'religion'. Tom Cruise knows what he's doing. Worst case scenario Posh and Becks don't convert to scientologists, but they at least they get the hook ups in Hollywood, especially Posh because she's aching to jump start her career again instead of being just Beck's 'wife', and Tom gets the hook ups in the International Arena via athletics, worldwide commerical deals, international contacts, etc. etc. etc. It's all about business, baby.

Soccer is huge in the rest of the world because people are excited by the idea of the competition and that their team might win even if they dont. I remember visiting Ireland when their team qualified for the knockout stages of the world cup and the country almost closed for the day to party. When they got knocked out they had another party. In the US they would have gone to commercial break put another team on the pitch and discussed statistics on the bathroom cleaner in minute detail.

I drive around the US and i see kids playing soccer everywhere. But the college system and money is biased towards the NFL franchise and the NFL is fixed so nobody can lose their place.

If you come bottom two of the Premiere league in the UK you get kicked down to a lower league ( like the minors in baseball) no matter how rich you are or who your sponsors are. That makes the top and the bottom of the leagues exciting. It also makes the top of the minors exciting. All the big names have been relegated from the top division in the past ( including Man U & Chelsea and even the mighty mighty Spurs) to lower divisions That cant happen in America because cash and sponsorship runs everything and because Americans wont accept losing. Results must be predetermined and predictable.

Americans dont like any sports where they cant win every time.
If they cant win they sulk and fix the rules so they have games only Americans can win at. ( Basketball, Baseball, NFL). Every sport in Amercia is becoming like wrestling - the winners and losers must be clearly defined, e3veryone must know who the good and the bad guys are, and in the end an American must win.

soccer is for people who dont have to think to play.

No Strategy, just run like a fool.
Even 'the Sweet Science' is more strategy than soccer....that is why the world plays, just a ball.

BORING!!!!!

Sure Scientology is based on unlikely to be true delusional beliefs that many would think delusion, but they are not objectively more strange or unlikely than the standard fare swallowed by Christians, Jews, and Muslims. The whole premise of religion is that it is supernatural and unable to be proven. It is foolish to critiize others' beliefs when your own are just as tenuous. RAmen.

point is christians and scientologists are both quacks, just because christians have 2000 years of history doesn't make it any more real. both of these beliefs in the supernatural, including those stupid muslum bastards, are all wrong ultimately. it makes thier lives and the world appear understandable so it works for them but when they start to thinking that others around them are wrong and need to think like they do is when the world goes to hell in a handbasket. just go home and worship to the spaghetti monster or whatever it is that you think is the reason you are here. ultimately you are still just a piece of dirt who was too weak to accept that fact you are a piece of dirt. the greeks were proven wrong in time and the christians and the scientologists and the muslims will all be proven wrong but they will kill and judge and hurt many people in the mean time. you guys are all a bunch of jackasses...see you in hell.

To the Scientologist plugging his bs Multi level marketing. Go to hell. Scientologists offer nothing for anyone of poor or average income except the chance to give out free Dianetics books and play hold the cans in front of unsuspecting retail establishments. Let's find flaws in your reactive mind. Your cult is thuggish and empty and filled with science fiction dialogue. Your men in black keep Tom, Kirstie and all the other high profile nuts on tight leashes, worse than a handler at the AKC show in Madison Square Garden. How dare you shamelessly plug your money cult in response to the Beckham's arrival in LA. Typical cult riff raff- IT'S ALL ABOUT ME!!! Save the cult, plug the cult, you'll feel better bring a friend blah blah blah. Stuff it and what about all the countries including Germany who cannot stand the cult and it's money grubbing ways. Remember that little lawsuit and all the others that have been levied against your cult? Take your shallow cult and it's thousand dollar courses of enlightenment and shove it. When you show me a person with no money to pay for books,cd's courses and weekend retreats etc and reaches the top level of of the cult then I will walk on water, cure leprosy and rise again. Stop hawking your empty shallow cult and get wise to the real Savior. It ain't about money, fame, space ships, or multi level marketing. You should not be a dot org but a dot CULT. I bet if you dig deep in your own reactive mind you will find the real reason why you need to be a Scientologist- why your family thinks your a kook now, or why they are distanced and apprehensive because they can smell the red herring stuffed up your nose so deeply that you have become immersed in a cult. Stop leading people to a money hungry cult and get yourself some assistance and save yourself from any more spiritual and financial abuse.

I don't care for soccer, bunch of pansies, running around falling down and crying like little girls on the playground. I almost expect them to hit one another with their purses.

I don't care for Europeans, bunch of pansies, So full of themselves yet they never really do anything but complain about us and watch soccer.

I Don't care for cults, bunch of idiots running around selling pansies at airports.

So I hope this Beckham fellow, whoever he is, Isn't a swishy euro-pansy coming to 'enlighten' us about something else we aren't interested in. Maybe he can take Tom Cruse back with him along with his flat soccer ball when he goes home.

Becks still has talent and anybody that prompts Americans to discuss soccer should be given a shot. It's the world's game for a reason. If you don't like it that's fine, but there's more to it than 22 guys running around on the pitch.

is a scam, not a religion. People who follow it (and spread it) SHOULD be questioned, about the teachings as well as their motives.

Scientology winsJan 14th, 2007 - 08:49:00

I really like Scientology because it has helped me resolve many issues in my life that I thought were not resolvable. I have a better relationship with my family, I am more capable of researching how to do things and it has opened up a whole new realm of possibilities in life. 10 years ago I was stuck in a dead end job and hit a glass ceiling. I thought there was no way for my life to improve and that was as high as I was ever going to go. Now I own three business, make 6 times the income I had as an employee, and am able to give my kids the life I always wanted as a child.

So to those who put down Scientology, all I can say is you must not be using any Scientology in your own life! I highly recommend actually studying it and trying it, before you nay say. If you haven't studied it and aren't using it, then you really have no idea what you're talking about.

Science FictionJan 14th, 2007 - 12:40:13

Ron Hubbard was a visionary science fiction writer who wrote some of the best stories I have ever read. His conception of the personality traits of the aliens in the galaxy are a possibility assuming our planet has been under alien observation. What I find interesting is his reference to the use of our plants especially the opium plant by the aliens. It seems that Terrence Mckenna may have stumbled into the doorway of understanding the alien mind or the plants akin to the alien mind. It is said that under the influence of certain plants all personalities even alien personalities come to the same conclusion. The truth is written in the stars. Light does not lie. The information contained in the circles which emanate this light offer truth. If you seek the truth you will not find it in the words of man. Truth needs to be experienced and then one will come to the understanding of the truth. Truth is not to be found in the words or ideas of man. Variety is found in man and also in alien. Variety is also found in the experience material beings have under the circle of light. Some among us became adept at using the circle of light to control the minds of the beings who are created within this light. These beings will do anything for control of the philosophy of light and the minds of the beings. Take a look at planet earth and history. The game of control is the nature of man trying to control man with their different light thesis.
So what is real? Good question. Money is not truth. Money is only a tool. However to a material being money is the only truth because it is a spirit which can pleasure the senses into absolute belief. If you follow the Money do you follow the truth. That is a personal decision. But think about it what else are we being taught to follow.
Money is a confusing Truth. It creates beliefs which will change based on the spirits in the Money. It does not offer the same truth to all beings. In fact it manipulates beings into believing their own truth about their use and need for the control of Money.
But it is not going to change. So why waste your time. The money will be followed just as sheep follow the herdsman. Its life as a material being. We cannot change this fact. So enjoy life and follow the money. Use money to paint your pictures of the truth.
It does have universal appeal. Its fun to talk and write about. Its the industry which supports and accepts human suffering.
So make gods of man and follow the truth of money. Its an excellent deception and a measure of the success of any religious belief.
As for me. Well I am looking directly into the Light and hoping that when I dissolve my crystal form is pure. Because the opportunity to become polluted while we are alive is very, very real.

Religion is Big Business no matter what name it goes under. Look at the Crystal Cathedral in California - a disgusting excess. Be wary of these mega religious buildings and the so-called leaders. They are usually wealthy beyond belief. You don't have to be rich or worship in these giant palaces to be religious and believe...............

For information on Scientology please see Operation Clambake at xenu.net.

As for myself, I once thought about become a Scientologist, but did my research, and what I found, scared me. I am glad I backed out.

I still get mailings regularly, though. The Scientologists are the only ones who know how to properly use the US Postal Service's mail forwarding records, it seems! Nothing in my life has automatically followed me for years as I move from place to place, except the Scientology advertisements. I wish other companies and organizations were as good at automatically forwarding my mail as the Scientologists....

People say 'scientology works'..... whatever that means. For the various Scientologists who were no doubt ordered to respond on here..... have you really had the promises in Dianetics fulfilled, or not? Did your vision improve to 20/20? Do you have perfect recall? Can we expose you to cold germs and watch you not get sick? If so, I'll bet you $10,000 I can't pick ten 'cleared' Scientologists at random who can read a list of one hundred ten-digits numbers in five minutes, and memorize them perfectly. You can't pick ten at random and find that either. Your cult makes the stupid mistake of making claims that can be tested, and if they actually are tested under real-life conditions they always fail.

Of course, the cult has enough criminal sense to isolate you from 'bad thinking' like mine. Or if you do get enough brain cells working to question things, they resort to psychological torture, and blame YOU for the failure! You need to take $20,000 worth of auditing again.... pay up! Talk to the Security Check people here for the next three weeks while you're at it. It's like being charged Riviera rates to live in North Korea.

But Scientology 'makes you feel better'. Well, I hear crack and meth make you feel better too, and I bet they're cheaper!! Hell, you can go to a shrink for your entire life and get meds without insurance and still spend less, and get better results. At least the shrink had to go to school somewhere, and has a state medical board keeping an eye on him. Of course, that's part of 'the big world wide conspiracy of psychiatrists' again. You always know you're dealing with top-shelf minds when they see big conspiracies everywhere.

I wish I'd thought of this sort of scam first. Too bad I was raised with a conscience.

One last question: If L. Ron Hubbard was such a great writer, why is all his early pulp fiction permanently out of print? You never, ever see his writing in the Weird Tles anthologies. Is it because..... it sucks? Why isn't there a big fat Bridge Publications volume of the 'best of L. Ron Hubbard'? Is it because it would be about eight pages long, with big print and lots of pictures so the Scientologists would read it?
