Ukrainian villages hosts rare European ostrich race
Sep 5, 2010, 15:45 GMT
Kiev - Residents of the Ukrainian village of Yasnohorodka on Sunday held a weekend of ostrich races, a pastime banned in most of Europe.
The winner was a bird named Zhuzkhka ('little beetle'), the 1+1 television channel reported.
The ostrich's rider won the race, in part, by staying mounted longer than the competition, according to the report.
Ostrich ranching has been a small but slowly growing industry in Ukraine since the late 1990s, when businessmen learned the African birds survived well in Ukraine's central and southern steppe regions.
Ostriches not carrying a rider can achieve a running speed of 70 kilometres an hour.
