Hong Kong - A chef was hospitalized with a suspected broken toe when a large turtle bit him to escape the cooking pot in a Hong Kong restaurant, police said Tuesday.
The 60-centimetre wattle-necked, soft-shelled turtle wrestled free from the chef's grasp on Monday evening and then sank its teeth into the little toe of his left foot when he tried to scoop it up.
The 35-year-old cook, surnamed Leung, screamed in agony and was taken to hospital while the turtle was trapped and put back in a cage, and the banquet at the Kuen Fat restaurant was called off.
The turtle is a species from southern China which cost hundreds of US dollars each and are served up as a delicacy in Hong Kong, China, and Japan. They are believed to have strong medicinal powers.
Sadly for the turtle, its escape was only temporary. It is due to be served up at a rescheduled banquet at the restaurant in Hong Kong's Sha Kei Wan district on Thursday.
