Arsonist flees Hong Kong tax office with pants on fire

Hong Kong - A suspected arsonist who started a fire in Hong Kong's tax office and then ran away with his trousers on fire was arrested by police Thursday afternoon. One hundred customers were evacuated after the middle-aged Chinese man walked into the Inland Revenue office in central Hong Kong, poured petrol over the counter then set it alight Thursday morning. No one was injured in the blaze except for the arsonist who fled with his trousers on fire and was chased by passers-by for some distance before jumping into a taxi and escaping, police said. He was arrested hours later when he went to a public hospital in the city to seek treatment for burns. An alert had earlier been put out by police to all hospitals and clinics. The motive for the attack was unclear and the suspect said nothing to staff before taking out a bottle of petrol and using a lighter to start the fire, said district police commander Blake Hancock. 'He did not say anything or argue with staff and we do not believe he is known to any members of Inland Revenue staff,' Hancock told reporters. The blaze was quickly extinguished.
