It's about time obese people should pay more!! I've thought that for years when it comes to the amount of weight you can be allowed to take on a plane.

I'm thinking that way too, why should some fat 300 pounder pay the same as someone who is trim and withing their normal weight range? It isn't fair!

THAT would solve the obesity crisis fast, wouldn't it? Insurance companies are also eying this as a health control method for their premium pricing too.

Worked for cigarettes...booze (DUI's are so costly and life disrupting that people have changed those habits too)

What about people who are tall? A 6 ft tall person shouldn't pay more than a 5 foot tall person, who will weigh less. And who gets to decide who pays more? I don't see people stepping on a scale in front of everyone.

weight to height ratios-
if a 6'6inch man weighing 220 lb (normal range) should pay the same as a 5 foot 100 pound woman. Its about people (any height) being in a NORMAL weight range for their frame.

You got it, and it doesn't take a scale to recognize obesity. We aren't talking a few pounds over a so-called normal weight. We're talking about the bloated, lumbering bodies.

You peopleJun 9th, 2008 - 16:02:12

are pathetically retarded!

Why not charge more toll across bridges because fat people cause more wear and tear on the bridge?

Let's not stop there. The added weight also causes the premature end of life for sidewalks and roads. Fatties should be taxed at a higher rate!

Sure, blame fatties because your government and big business have screwed America.

We're talking about people being limited in the weight they can have on an airplane - plain and simple. Don't get so sarcastic! If you flew much, you'd understand!

The hatred being spewed on this thread is pathetic. You're using this moment as an excuse to put somebody else down because of your obvious low self esteems. The above poster is correct, there's no way you could stop at just one extra fee, you would have to attack overweight people all the way across the board. Now, my suggestion to you pitiful people who are hissing at the 'fatties', is to get counseling for your personality disorder, work on trying not to hate others so much, and get a life! There's much more important things to worry about, and life it too short to go around hating people the way you do.

If you can't understand the logic of the problems being caused by the horribly obese in this country, then you are living under a rock.

Unfair?Jul 11th, 2008 - 20:31:59

Why is it unfair to charge somebody for the services that they are receiving? US Airways claims one pound of added weight costs 13,000 gallons of fuel per year for their fleet. That's pretty impressive.

Agreed, charging someone by their 'normal weight range' is unfair and doesn't address the principle. Charge by weight. Period. If it costs an extra 50 gallons of fuel to haul an NFL linebacker than it does a gymnast, they should pay more. Just like they do at a restaurant when said linebacker orders 4x as much food. Just like the linebacker does when he has to buy his clothes from the Big & Tall section. It is no different, heavier people should have to pay for the cost they are incurring.

I think that you guys are right in a way because skinny people shouldnt have to pay for other people who are overweight. I am 320lbs and just had to pay for two seats because I am going to see my family in two weeks, It sucked but what can I do! I was way too much compared to what I used to pay which is redicoulous!

As long as I have to pay for diseases related to obestity, then it is not crazy to think that society can have a say in how much it costs you to be fat. I'm a physician, and I see people lose weight every day once they get the right motivation. Usually that's something bad like a heart attack, diabetes or stroke (or blood clot, also more likely with a higher body mass index) but also less awful stuff like arthritis. Higher load bearing makes joints hurt more, weight loss can make them hurt less. I don't send them to a gastric bypass surgeon. I send them to Weight Watchers. Look at www.weightwatchers.com. $40 a month. Results. Done.
SO:
that being said, we don't chart obese people more for their health insurance. But I've had to sit next to plenty of large people with BMI's in excess of 40 or 50. Their bodies encroach on my seat, and make me hot and uncomfortable. One man's civil rights end where another man's (or woman's) nose beings. Or something like that. I think you could charge by the pound, or else by the number of seats. If you can't fit in one seat, it isn't fair for you to rob me of mine. Buy two. And let me fly in comfort. If charging by the pound would get airline passengers to lose weight, fine. But then I'd still have the same problem, unless I get a discount when the person next to me starts taking my space.

You may call it 'fattie hatred' if you wish, but if they show no respect for themselves, they will surely get none from me, either.
