What is your laptop worth if a repair tech "loses" it?

How about $54 million? The Star-Tribune reports that plaintiff Raelyn Campbell of Washington, D.C., is suing Best Buy for that amount after her laptop computer disappeared while it was in for repairs.

The Star-Tribune reports that Campbell filed her negligence lawsuit suit against the company in Washington Superior Court on Nov. 16, "seeking fair compensation for replacement of the $1,100 computer and extended warranty, plus expenses related to identity theft protection."

Best Buy allegedly offered her $1,110.35 as well as "a $500 gift card for her inconvenience," according to the report.

The Star-Tribune unearthed Campbell's blog at  bestbuybadbuyboycott.blogspot.com, where she contends Geek Squad employees spent three months telling her different stories about where her laptop might be before finally admitting the truth.

What is your lap-top worth if someone "misplaces" it?

$1,100 computer + extended warranty + expenses related to identity theft protection != $54 million. She will *not* get that amount.

But it's a sad day in America when lawsuits like this one are allowed to proceed. Just like the Judge in DC who sued the laundry for a gabillion dollars for misplacing his pants.

she does not expect to get this amount and is in fact only trying to teach Best Buy a lesson. Her goal was to get media attention and she got it. More power to her.

more power to her for clogging up the system with frivolous lawsuits.

Way to go. It doesn't matter what the excuse may be.

If she was concerned about identity theft why did she take her laptop in for repairs?

It's frivolous, yes. But Best Buy deserves the bad publicity. The jerks refused to give my mother her rebate on a direct tv dish. One of the supervisors actually had the nerve to walk up to her, stick her face 2 inches away from my mother's (rude in any country by the way), and say 'We can't help you, so you just go home now' with a condescending tone. (my mother is elderly, the supervisor even spoke slowly like she was making sure the old gal understood her) Suffice it to say, mom's a pitbull, she eventually won after legal threats and got her rebate, but Best Buy lost at least 20 customers over it. How many did they lose this time? Isn't it about time someone looks into their practices, and figure out why there's so many complaints lodged against them compared to other retailers? The Best Buy in my area advertised the ps2 for a discounted price, and a month later when it went on sale, they jacked the price up $100.00 that very morning when they saw the lines outside! Isn't there a law somewhere to protect us from these creeps?
