How can this possibly be legal? Umm...descrimination much?

That's the problem with this frick'n country. Instead of solving important issues that face this country, the stupid assed politicians infringe more and more on our daily lives.

I am so glad to see this.

These people think it is their right to go around gobbling food left and right, and when they end up in the hospital, of course they want us to pay for it. When they fly on an airplane, they try to raise the armrest and steal the space we've paid for. No more!

this is just another form of discrimination.
many years ago in mississippi, you couldn't
eat in restuarants if you were black. now you
won't be served if you are obese. how about these
politicians figure out a way to lower interest rates greedy lenders charge. how about lowering property and sales taxes. how about the concerns of the infrastructure. seems to me they have too much work for their employer (taxpayers)
than to thrust themselves deeper into peoples personal lives.

Stop discriminate fat people! What a bad law you make! Deciding who can & cannot eat at a restaurant is not, and SHOULD not be the government's business! I know there are many websites are catering specifically to fat people like plusmingle.com, naafa, ect. Approximately 127 million adults in the U.S. are plus-sized, and more than 1 billion worldwide!!!

If the government would stop letting the big business farm industry hide the extra calories they grow in the form of corn and soy by-products (which they do for subsidies); I think alot of people who don't know better wouldn't get so fat. And it's usually the poor and undereducated that think the beans and such they got out of a can growing up had the same calories as the current ones. It just isn't so. Missippi should look to educating their citizens instead of discriminating.

Perhaps they should attach a rider to that bill for dis-allowing, rude and idiotic people who write bills like this to be banned from running for political offices.

People have a right to be fat.

They should also ad a rider that ALL ANOREXIC people be rounded up and fed once a day, Pro-Bono, by all local restaurants, just to be fair. Which, when you think about it really works out well, perhaps obese law officers rounding up the Anorexic will not be allowed DONUTS and forced to watch the anorexic people eat, why stop at bullying fat people, when you can bully everyone?

We all play Football and someone in Mississippi at a restaurant is going to tell us or ask us not to eat there?
Looks like Ole Miss is going to not get our hard earned dollars.
And as for a so called Law,and restaurant asking for folks not to eat their because of size. I would rather spend Twenty Five Thousand Dollars on going after the Law in court then spend twenty Five cents in Mississippi.

Okay so let me get this straight, you can't refuse to serve someone based on the color of their skin, their gender or nationality - but you can refuse to serve people based on their weight??? Guess they have to pick on someone!! Once this is found illegal by the Supreme Court (you KNOW a lawsuit is coming) what will they pick on next?

Don't get me wrong, I believe people should take care of their bodies. But is most certainly NOT the job of the government to play mama and daddy to people.

We should also pass laws that don't allow ugly people from entering beauty contests, laws that ban red haired people from wearing green hats on St. Patrick's day, etc. Anything that might offend anyone should be against the law. Why not let's just say in the end, we just pass a law to make soilent green out of everyone who doesn't fit into the catagory of mediocre.

I live in TaiwanFeb 3rd, 2008 - 18:57:06

One person out one hundred here is 20 pounds or more above the average and they are looked upon with disdain. These people walk around with their heads down and are ridiculed at every turn. Why don't you people who want to pass this law just move to Taiwan where you will feel comfortable when you go out to eat in restaurants.

American in TaiwanFeb 3rd, 2008 - 19:42:14

Eating in Taiwan is a lot of fun, because you get to eat the way you wanted to when you were five.

You pick the bowl up to about three inches from your mouth, and shovel massive amounts of food in with chopsticks. You can slurp noodles and burps are not repressed.

With chicken or fish, you just put the whole thing in your mouth, and when you hit a bone, you spit it out on the table. After a meal, the table is covered in things people didn't want, like bones and shells. You will never find fat or gristle on the table, as these are the favorites.

The Chinese don't drink while eating. When they have eaten enough, they refill the bowl with clear broth, which they drink, to wash down their meal. Finally, you eat a piece of fruit, to kill dragon-breath.

In Taiwanese restaurants, it is customary to order a plate of toothpicks at the end of the meal. Then everyone sits around, picking their teeth. They wipe the dirty toothpick on the table, right beside the pile of chewed up bones and peanut shells. In their minds, we are the disgusting ones. I hear them telling their friends, 'Foreigners will eat a whole meal and then not use a tooth pick.'

At home, I made noodles with dried beef, pork, squid, and seaweed. I wondered why I always felt bloated afterwards. But then I realized, it might been because the quantity of dried beef I used in soup, if re-constituted, would equal a whole cow.

At my first teaching job I got a free lunch at school. I was walking into the cafeteria as my Canadian colleague, another Teacher was walking out, empty- handed. 'It's just too foul,' he said, his head hung low. Lunch was some sort of greasy and appalling mixture of foods I would never consider eating. The main course was congealed fat, with a side dish of, what I thought, was green bowtie pasta but turned out to be seaweed.

I was going to throw away my lunch uneaten, again, when I ran into Teacher Greg. 'Greg, do you want my congealed fat?'
'No thank you. It makes me vomit,' he said, and went on about his business.

I told another Teacher that I had started learning Kung Fu.
'Why did you do that?' She asked.
'So I won't get out of shape and fat.' I said.
'You would never get fat.' She assured me.

I thought she was paying me a compliment about being in great shape. But then she went on. 'Foreigner teachers never get fat here. They all lose weight. I think it is because they hate the food.'

Talk about disgusting. I stopped off at an outdoor noodle cafe in taipei one afternoon to have a bowl of noodles with a beautiful friend of mine.

A taxi driver pulls up to the curb, grabs a bowl of noodles from a nearby counter, plops himself down across from my friend then starts sucking and slurping his noodles, looking up and leering at my friend and giving an ocassional wink while licking the rim of his bowl.

This went on for a couple of minutes until my Ladyboy friend stood up and flashed her Johnson! He fell over in the dirt and ran back to his taxi as fast as his scrawny butt could carry him! Hah, Taiwan taxi drivers, gotta love 'em.

Laws like that are totally stupid. I say if people want to be fat, let them at it. No one has an excuse to be obese unless they have no will power whatsoever. Even if you can't read, you can watch TV, and the information on good nutrition is everywhere - so, if they want to be that way, that's their own preference. I also think if a person goes through a buffet line and keeps eating enormous amounts of food over a long period of time, they should be charged extra, but not just because they are fat!

dear markerFeb 3rd, 2008 - 21:23:27

How about if skinny people go through the buffet line for more and more, perhaps they are just really hungry. I believe obesity is not a matter of will power. If the law makers really want to help obese people (who quite often have type 2 diabetes), they should support health care laws that enable citizens to have their stomaches stapled (as they do in Australia).
Thus lowering health problems due to obesity. Perhaps they should also pass laws on how many food and beverage related commercials play on TV each hour.

I didn't say that just obese people who go through buffet lines over and over should be charged more - it should apply to anyone who takes advantage. I still say people have to be responsible for themselves and not always blame someone else for their problems. If they are happy being obese that's their prerogative, but don't expect others to bail them out of their unhealthy lifestyle. We all have the same information, and if we didn't use a little self control, a lot more of us would be waddling around because we ate anything and everything just because it was there and tasted good. Self control in eating goes along with self control in doing anything to excess - period!

There are FAT people that are not FAT because they stuff food down thier throats 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I am one of those Fat
persons who doesn't shove food down my throat. I have hypothyroidism and a few other problems that stop me from losing weight. I am going up to 16 hours a day as much as possible. If I don't keep moving, like now, I gain weight even if I hardly eat. It hurts people like me to always be accused of being pigs when others have no clue what some of us go through. .
I also believe obesity from eating too much is a mental disorder as well as a physical disorder. They pay for people with anorexia, bulemia to get help but rarely does anyone pay for helping people to lose weightbecause of eating too much. It is a health problem that should be looked into more.
And to be honest, anyone I see who pigs out makes me want to vomit. It is discusting even to us fat people.
Another issue with obesity is Doctors. I kept telling a Doctor I on't eat much, I am always on my feet and so on. He called me a lier. Even my family and friends are upset because I don't eat much and they see me everyday and they cannot understand why I don't eat am always going and Im as FAT as I am. I want anyone who doesn't know that because of my weight issue and from being ignored so long about something is not right it has caused me a lot of grief. It hurts any FAT person who is physically or mentally ill from obesity to be thought of as pigs and not people. I have tried to accept myself like one doctor who understood my problem said to do. But I don't accept not trying as hard as I do to be smaller because my body won't let me. And anyone aplauding Fat people not being alowed in a rrestaurant- I wish you knew more about obesity than you do. Now if this really happens what they going to do with the FAT people who now are stuck at home eating more because of peoples ill attitudes towrds them.

It's been documented that the majority of obese people don't have a physical problem that makes them that way. In some cases it may well be a mental problem, but too often it's just plain eating too much and not exercising enough to offset it - not enough will power or an 'I don't give a damn' attitude'! We've all seen this time and again! There have been so many obese people who finally decide to lose weight only to be confronted with pounds and pounds of loose skin hanging all over their body - another major reason to control your weight!

Hi MelissaFeb 4th, 2008 - 03:39:20

I think the doctor who called you a liar about your eating habits should have his medical license revoked, then he should be drawn and quartered and fed to the pigs.
It's true what you say that some people can't lose weight or have great difficulty in losing weight. I have one uncle who is super skinny, the doctors beg him to eat more, but no matter how much he eats he never gains weight.
I have another uncle(his brother) who has been overweight for years and the doctors tell him to diet but no matter how hard he tries he never loses weight. I think it has something to do with a genetic metabulism gage. Some people are just genetically set for 'High' and others 'Low' even though they are from the same family. One uncle inherited his father's high metabulism gage and the other his mother's low metabulism gage.
Common sense bears this out.
At one time in earth's history rotund women were sought after and worshiped as goddesses. Skinny women were rejected by society as being poor and ignorant. Now the pendulum has swung the other way, so try not to take it personally. I think big woman are beautiful you can come to my house and eat with me any day.

Law makers should also spend the tax payers money focusing on groups such as men who can't control their hair loss, come on guys wear a hat in public or give up some of your beer money to buy Ro-gain, if that doesnt work get some hair transplants because frankly we are all disgusted with your genetic disposition to lack of hair.
For example: laws should be passed that:

a)bald men wear hats in public

b)society is taxed for hair growth stimulants and balding men are required by law to use them.

c)Finally, hair transplants are mandated and performed by the state.

d) Somewhere far into the future, all pregnancies will be genetically altered so all humans will grow up to have supermodel body types and high intelligence with super human will powers.

Oh, wait a minute, that's a NAZI idea isn't.

Funny thing about that whole 'fat people eat too much' concept. Most of the fat people I know don't eat nearly enough. Because of social concepts 'don't eat so much junk' has whittled its way down to 'don't eat so much,' until many obese people have taken to just not eating.

Stop perpetuating the myth that all fat people are fat because they don't stop eating, and instead start pointing out that if people manage to eat more of the the healthy whole foods on a more regular basis they'd not only be more likely to lose weight, they'd feel better.

And by the way, at the top acceptable weight according to the BMI I'd look anorexic. Why? Because bone is heavy and the AMA hasn't discovered that girls can be built like a linebacker.

50 pounds overFeb 4th, 2008 - 07:08:46

I was 50 pounds over weight for several years, no matter how hard I tried, it seems I was always losing the battle.

Then I moved to Bangkok Thailand to teach English.
I walked to my school(about 40 minutes round trip)I had soy milk for breakfast or fruit, lunch was always rice with a little meat and a medium portion of vegetables(no desert,no dairy), for dinner I had a salad with lots of red beans every night.
I never ate past 7 in the evening and I went walking 4 hours per weekend. At the end of 6 months I had lost those 50 pounds. I think my environment and having structure in my days really helped a lot, also not eating any dairy foods or bakery. I treated myself to Fast food once a month and had a beer a few times a week and still lost the weight. State of mind and general feeling of well being helps a lot too.

What really helped the most was I had no kitchen or refrigerator in my tiny apartment. I think that made a huge difference.

Best wishes for those who want to try a healthy controlled diet plan.
I forgot who said, 'Blow up your TV's' back in the sixties, but my advice for Americans who want to lose weight is, 'Blow up your Refrigerators, and go walking every day.' Prof Martin

I live in Mississippi, and this is the first I've even heard of such a law in the works. This is ridiculous. What are they going to do, have a set of scales at the door? If you weigh too much, are they going to tell you to leave? Talk about frivolous law suits, this is a set up for just such a thing.
We are not 'inbred, mouthbreathing, trailer trash'. There is trailer trash everywhere in the US, not just the South.
Back to my comment: I am overweight. I do weigh a little over 200 lbs., but I don't sit around all day eating. I barely eat breakfast. I do eat lunch, sometimes, then there is dinner/supper which ever, in the South, it's supper. I eat a full course meal at that time, but I do not over eat. I dare someone to look at me and say I'm too fat to eat at their restaurant.
This bill will never make it to law, it's too stupid. These guys are probably just tired of seeing 'fat' people eating. What are they supposed to do, starve? Maybe that's what they want, then they won't have to worry about them anymore.
These guys need to have more to do. Seems to me thay have too much time on their hands. The focus needs to be on education in Mississippi. There are more important issues to discuss than someone's weight. Really!!

Excuses, excuses always ! People need to take some responsiblity for themselves for a change! It would be ridiculous for a law like this to be passed, but obesity is getting to be a serious problem with the experts predicting that in a couple of years a big percentage of our young people will be obese. A doctor said that about 20% of the population has a medical problem that causes the weight, but what about the other 80%??? Lack of self control and refusing to engage in healthy eating and exercising habits plays a big part in this. Like someone said, everyone needs to be responsible for themselves, but also sometimes these obese people cause major problems for those around them.

My first thought is that some sleazy bean counter for an all-you-can-eat cafeteria chain dreamed this one up and Mississippi is going to be the prototype. The economy is in such bad shape and a lot of people cannot afford to eat out very much anymore. The country is going down the tubes so fast that I would not be surprised if it turns out to be a law that is passed and enforced. Or it may be that one of those people that someone hires to try to get bills passed is behind it, but you can bet that somewhere in all of it is someone who has a financial interest in it. What a sorry thing. Hope whoever is behind it reaps what he has sown.

Someone else already said this better than I can. Some people have to have someone to discriminate against. There is a certain type of people who make themselves feel better by verbally running other people down. They have to have some group of people to be against or to feel superior to. Some of these people go to great lengths to not absorb calories. Some people manage to throw up most of what they eat. To me that is disgusting. Some of the people that are thin and feel so superior because of that are the meanest, most small-minded, stupid superficial people in the world, but if having their weight under control is all they have to be proud of, I feel sorry for them.

Many People in Haiti are so poor they eat 'Dirt Cookies' made with dirt, salt and grease. And these cookies are not washed down with soda pop after a meal of fried chicken. They have become a staple food for the poor.

Americans are over pampered and spoiled for choice. Blow up your TV's, Blow up your Refrigerators.

A hundred years from now China will have the same problem and Americans will be learning how to bake Dirt cookies from the Haitians.

Stop whining about poor countries. They can come to the U.S. and get a job. Then they can have McDonalds dollar menu stuff on the cheap for the poor. There are always solutions. So please...keep poor nations out of this and wait for an article pertaining to your comment. You are out of place with this one.

Who do you think you are?
How many thousands of people go in for bi-pass surgery, stomach stapling, or the sleeve, and try every diet there is to lose weight. How many people are now annorexic because of people like the 'law makers' decide who can or can not eat in their restaurants..My daughter, my son and my self have done these surgeries, and you don't lose the weight overnight. Sugar, carbohydrates, and even the peeling on some foods make us very sick!! Are you telling me that, while we are in the process of losing this weight, we are NOT going to be served??
Do you have any idea of WHAT YOUR RESTAURANTS are serving?? How many fat grams, how much sugar, how many carbohydrates are in each serving? Instead of being prejudice against fat people, why don't you encourage the restaurants to serve better foods, healthy foods, even the right portions, not as a choice, but as a 'LAW'!! Do you even realize that those that have had these surgeries have a very hard time going to a restaurant any way because of what is in the foods that are being served? And the portions? Who says a restaurant has to have buffets? Or even serve half a chicken plus all the other stuff they put on your plate. Just try to order fruit!!!!
There are 13 year olds trying to have these surgeries or becoming annorexic or bulimic.
Between the three of us, we can order one meal and be full, but your 'law' doesn't even want to serve us?? Who do you think you are??

While i agree that this law seems outrageous, is it really that much different than a restaurant not being able to serve someone alcohol to the point of intoxication - or even not being allowed to serve a member of AA who is a recovering alcoholic?

They aren't talking about taking food away from 'fat' people, it seems they are trying to stop extremely obese people from causing further injury to themselves. If they want to eat, they can still go buy food at the grocery and eat or whatever - much like alcohol. While it seems extreme, and i don't necessarily agree with it, i'm just looking at it from the other side. They are doing it for the health and good of their state and its residents, not because they don't like fat people.

And what bout Subway and health food restraunts? A fat person can get fatter sitting at home eating so what is the point of this stupid law besides discrimination. What could happen without this law? Will obese people sue buffet's for contributory negligence?

I guess maybe bath sides need to see the other's perspective. Obese people should not be limited because of their size, however they should not get free special privileges (I often am crowded on the commuter train by an obese person infringing on my space - I should not have to endure this) nor should society be responsible for providing special accomodations for these people. It is a give and take, if you have a certified medical condition (mental state and willpower are not medical conditions) you should be accommodated, however, if it is simply a lifestyle issue, then the obese must not impinge on others rights.

The fat person above in the pic has needles in his stomach. He is trying accupunture. thie key part in that sentance is HE IS TRYING! Do you honestly think over weight people choose to be overweigh and want to be that way. Every single person has a kink in thier chain, Smokers, drinkers, eaters, gamblers, liars, sex abusers, workaholics, domestic violence, vanity, supidity, ignorance, on and on and on. I grew up with my mother who cooked southern foods but never wieghed over 120 pounds at 5'4 even when pregnant. My dad was a big guy who had been a boxer in the navy and could eat and eat but also got outside and sweat it out by working in the hot sun. So while my mom poored brown gravy over chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes and served corn on the side with an ice cold coke I was not allowed to leave the table until my meal was gone. Even if I couldn't eat the entire plate before bed time I had to eat it cold in the morning before I would be allowed to eat any other meal. I was only allowed to play outside after finishing all my homework but never in the dark. So I gained and gained. I was a plump 13 year old when my mom had her first heart attack. Even though she had been thin all her life that food did her in 3 years after that. So I was 16 and had pleanty meat on my bones. It was hard but I changed my way of life by 18 I had gotten to a size 4. I eat green veggies and drink water and try to exercise daily, but sometimes I want to go o the Dairy Queen and get a chocolate covered ice cream bowl. I cannot imagine how hurting peoples feelings and blaming the fat people for health care problems and not allowing them to eat will help anything. Skinny people die with as much issues as fat people do. And nobody wants to pay healthcare for a person who is fat but nobody is griping about paying for the druggies and prostitutes.

The only people who are upset about this law are most likely obese themselves. I completely agree with this law. America is the most obese country in the world. Doesn't anyone see a problem with that? It's so funny how people are quick to assume that it's discrimination, most likely because they think the only people pushing for this law to pass are not obese themselves, but that's not necessarily true. If we're supposed to be big great America, then we should start taking care of ourselves. I agree with a previous post on here. These are the same people who'll end up with the hospital with heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. then young people like me will have to pay more into social security and will push my retirement age up more and more because people have no self control. I completely agree with this law, and I think they should put it into effect immediately and consider it in Massachusetts as well (because I live there). Who cares if it was passed by a bunch of Republicans anyways, are you trying to say that no republicans are obese and they're all just discriminating? If anything, obese people should feel discriminated everytime they turn on the TV when they see shows about obesity clinics, and never see a fat Miss America (ironically).

Are you from the U.S.? What nationality are you? Brazilian, Italian or maybe some kinda spanish? You have not seen the important points here.
To discriminate anyone for race, color, creed or ethnic origin is not ethically correct. Thats what creed means whatever group you belong in.
This time around it means Fat persons. Everyone has the same rights in this country,America. You can't tell someone they can't do something for all of the above reasons. It's wrong. WRONG , wrong .
Someone else said the politicos and lawmakers should concentrate on relevant topics like education and repairing bad hi-way conditions.
That was an important point. I take it from your comment that you yourself are disgusted by the overweight in a public place.
I am fat and being this way has never hindered me. I have a complete life. I ride my Harley and go bowling and have a wife who is also overweight. ( I love her ) We go to dinner at restaraunts and we get stares, Because we are overweight. But my cash is the same and I pay for whatever I eat ( and DRINK ! ) This entire stupid idea is just as bad as Blacks on the back of the bus and Hitler killing jews. NO it does not rate on the EVIL scale as highly but it has the same merit on the stupid scale.
To discriminate for race, color, creed or ethnicity is wrong.
Don't tell me we have to change the amendments now. Be smarter in your biased opinions people don't look like someone who hates for hates sake.

It's a little difficult to feel sorry for these people who balloon up to obese weight, then decide they better do something about it. Stomach stapling, etc., are very serious, dangerous surgeries, and cutting back on fattening food and getting exercise are certainly the better choices in most cases. Try sitting behind an obese person on a long airline flight where they pushed back so hard, they broke the seat until it was resting on your knees, and there was no other seat available!!

(Fat Farm Law, Too Fat For You).

All people 18 and older who are not gainfully employed will be put to work in state owned work camps where they will perform hard labor and live on a healthy diet until they are of proper weight.

Then be released back into the public no longer a menace or burden to society.

They will be entitled to minimum wage salaries from which the state will deduct taxes, medical bills, room and board.

Mr.Skinny

If the state can find enough things to charge the obese people with while a 'Guest of the state' they might actually come out ahead by releasing their citizens as 'Indentured Servants' until they re-coop all their expenses
;-)

This even surpasses the recent proposed legislation in Iowa to ban the sale of United States, Iowa or military commemorative flags such as the P.O.W./M.I.A. flags made outside the United States.

What is that term? Uhh...selective uhm? Hmmm? Well in nature it's called natural selection. For every out of shape overweight obese person there is a beautiful specimen of humanity to reflect. One fitness freak and one fatty. When the end of the world comes ( which is what we should really be worried about ) Those that can't hunt or fight or keep up with the rapid changes in the environment will die.
It is nature for there to be fat people. There are truly no scientific studies that show there are more fat people in the US as opposed to the UK. There are fat people all over the world. It's not really true about America being fatter than anyone else. It's just a good insult to make us look bad. No...there will never be a fat gal in the miss America contest or a fat dude posing in a G-string against Arnold wanna be's. But they are always going to be around. As always. And all these studies and stats? They don't reflect the population growth.
It just shows that people are getting fatter as time goes by. It's a blanket statement based regionally. The more educated and philosophical don't even care about this it's got no real societal relevance.
Use your IQ's for something smarter and stop sweating the small stuff.

Second, this is one of the dumbest laws I have ever heard of, we have solders dying, we have homeless people that would do anything to eat or feed there childern, but some dumb butt needs to come up with lets band fat people from eating out, oh that is just a jewel there.

The law would be so stupid. People need to take responsibility for themselves, though, and not wait 'till they are bloated up beyond belief and then expect others to bail them out of their situation! Other than poor, unfortunate people, how many of us really eat because we are actually hungry? We eat because it tastes good and it's there! People don't eat a whole cake, pizza, etc., because they are so hungry - it's available, and they have no resistance.

This whole thread of comments illustrates how easily people are mislead and how little fact-checking is done before opinions are expressed.
This is NOT a law, and was never intended to be. The legislator who proposed the law was trying to point out that his state has the highest obesity rate in the US, and that people should be more aware of their eating habits. He never thought it would be passed, and it won't be. So, chill, dummies.
BTW, on my last visit to the US, I can say from personal observation that I have rarely seen so many lard-a$ wallowing about, with the exception of Germany and the UK, where steatopygia is ubiquitous.
