German mail deliverer hides 10,000 items in bedroom to cut workload

Straubing, Germany - A postwoman in a small Bavarian town faces charges for hiding 10,000 mail items in her bedroom to cut her workload, German police said Friday.
Police detained the 21-year-old woman with around 150 undelivered items as she deposited them in her car after leaving work in the town of Straubing.
She had been stealing mail since the autumn of last year, they said, after finding 13 sacks and five washing baskets full in her bedroom.
Deutsche Post, the former state monopoly, said it intended to deliver the mail to residents in the community of some 45,000.
The incident comes amid a continuing political debate on the wages of lowly-paid workers.
A minimum wage for postal workers of around 9 euros (13 dollars) an hour was imposed by the federal parliament from the beginning of the year, when it lost its monopoly on delivering letters.
Competitors said they would be forced to cut thousands of staff.
