PETA punishes convicted Texas cannibal with vegan diet
By Stone Martindale Jan 11, 2008, 17:17 GMT
Tyler, Texas Sheriff's officials were floored by a letter from PETA requesting the man accused of murdering his girlfriend and possibly eating her in a ritual of cannibalism be placed on a vegetarian diet to keep him from being "involved in any senseless killing" while incarcerated.
The letter was faxed to the Smith County Sheriff's Jail from the national headquarters of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Thursday morning,
reports the Tyler Morning Telegraph.
"You have to be kidding me, right?" was his initial reaction to the news of the letter asking the jail to feed Christopher Lee McCuin, 25, a vegan diet.
The Tyler paper reports that McCuin is jailed for the murder of 21-year-old Jana Shearer and authorities have said, in previous stories, that when McCuin was taken into custody there was an ear boiling in a pot of water on the stove and a plate on the kitchen table with what appeared to be human flesh and a fork.
"It is up to you to prevent McCuin from contributing to any more suffering and death by placing him on a healthy, humane vegetarian diet," the letter by PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich reads.
In a phone interview with the Tyler Paper Thursday, Friedrich responded the letter was serious and was not intended to be funny nor take away from the brutal death suffered by Ms. Shearer.
"Like humans, animals are made of flesh, blood, and bone. They have the same five senses that we do, and they have the same capacity to experience suffering and fear. And all animals share the desire to live their lives free of pain and to avoid a violent death," he said.
Friedrich said his organization hoped to help Smith County prepare a nutritional vegetarian menu and possibly help organize a menu for the entire jail population.
Smith says it won't happen: "I told (Gary) Pinkerton, the jail administrator, McCuin would be treated like any other prisoner and would be fed like everyone else," he said. "The Texas Jail Commission mandates how we feed the prisoners and if I fed him differently I would violate his rights and PETA is asking me to break the law and I won't do that."
Smith told the paper that acts of cannabilism never happened under his watch.
"Nope, that has never happened," he said to the Tyler Morning Telegraph. "Besides (McCuin) is isolated so the only person he's going to bite is himself."

I agree with the above poster. The circle of life was created for a reason, and it's wrong to break that circle. Peta is just taking advantage again, and trying to force their humanizing of animals on someone in a cage that can't escape them. What good would a vegetarian diet be for a killer? Oh, that's right, it's not about the diet, it's about the killing of his girlfriend and her suffering. They think that if he eats meat, he's causing more suffering. Trust me PETA, as a hunter, the animals I've taken down don't suffer. I kill em quick, then proudly serve them to my friends and family.
'If God, or mother nature, had not wanted animals to eat other animals, then there would be no carnivores on the planet.'
'God': then by the same reason, he would not have created viruses, bacteria, parasites etc. and we are all happy to act against them.
'carnivores' - why bring this into the debate. We are not carnivores and we should not be deriving our morality from them. If something is OK for a lion to do, are you then saying its OK for us?
'Nature': Nature does not 'want' anything. If you wish to directly derive morality from what nature gives life the ability to do, then, we should have no problem with murder, rape and theft.
Your objections to PETA's stance on this issue may be sincere but the reasons you give do not justify the your feelings.
The way we raise and slaughter animals now IS NOT natural. Chickens, for example, that we get eggs from live in a cage in a space smaller than a piece of paper, usually in dark windowless sheds their entire life. Male chicks that are born are thrown into dumpsters to slowly die or ground alive in a meat grinder. Chickens are scalded alive when being slaughtered. Animals were not put on earth to be treated this way! BTW - The chicken we buy from the grocery store is so 'dangerous' because instead of being air dried before packaging, it is soaked in feces water so that it weighs more when sold. I wish more people would actually go read about all this instead of defending and supporting it.
God': then by the same reason, he would not have created viruses, bacteria, parasites etc. and we are all happy to act against them.
- Perhaps those things are meant to stabilize the planet, no? Just like animals eating animals. Not a very good argument.
'carnivores' - why bring this into the debate. We are not carnivores and we should not be deriving our morality from them. If something is OK for a lion to do, are you then saying its OK for us?
- Sure. I eat the flesh of animals like an animal. Perhaps it is not my “Main” diet, but I consume it every day. You know what I mean. Don’t be a dork. And I have been called a pig on more than one occasion and have “humped many a leg. Eating meat and morality is your guilt trip, not mine.
'Nature': Nature does not 'want' anything. If you wish to directly derive morality from what nature gives life the ability to do, then, we should have no problem with murder, rape and theft.
- Nature does want things. If left alone, she is wonderful. And meat-eating animals play an important role in it all. Again, you are confused.
Peta strikes again! I needed a good laugh. And to all of you religious posters, RELAX! Animals eat other animals, and we're animals. If you chose not to do so, go for it. But don't go forcing your beliefs on others like peta is trying to do. And those who believe in hunting and meat eating, you go for it too. Just don't try to stop veggies from being veggies. It's a very personal choice, and nobody should be able to make that choice for others. Now, back to my turkey and havarti salad....
I think that Hunters are despicable people, who enjoy sadistic butchering of animals. How anyone can shoot poor defenseless animals and call it sport, is beyond me. Then, hang their heads on the wall, or skin them for rugs! Bunch of crazy murderers!
You must not realize how half of what you consume or wear is made and probably don't want to know how it derives from animals.
So stop being such a hypocrite.
'But all that ended when I received a pamphlet from PETA stating that one should not take their children fishing because 'hooking a fish and reeling it in causes much anxiety and stress on the fish'.'
**And what's wrong with that? What crime have fish commited to be deserving of torture and death?
'Good grief. If God, or mother nature, had not wanted animals to eat other animals, then there would be no carnivores on the planet.'
**We are not carnivores. And we are different, we know right and wrong. Unlike carnivores we don't NEED flesh to survive. To choose to consume it anyways is to do so for PLEASURE and pleasure killing is murder. I guess if God or mother nature had not wanted animals to cannibalize there wouldn't be animals that eat their own species? So I guess you must think that cannibal is innocent too right? Since wild animals eat their own kind. They also kill and eat their young...do you support child abuse? They rape...do you support rape? Come on don't use what non-humans do as an excuse to do it too...we are supposed to be a CIVILIZED and COMPASSIONATE society.
' Trust me PETA, as a hunter, the animals I've taken down don't suffer.'
**But you did steal their lives away. So if I shoot a person in the back of the head so that he feels no pain and is not aware he is about to die, it's not wrong and I won't go to jail? What if I proudly serve the victims flesh to my friends and family?
'Animals eat other animals, and we're animals.'
**They also cannibalize, kill/eat/abandon their young, tresspass, steal, rape, and do many more things our society considers wrong. But that's the difference between non-humans and humans, we are supposed to be a civilized, caring society. If you do not want to be a part of it maybe you should get off the internet, find an isolated plate, and live off the grid in a cave like an uncivilized caveman.
'But don't go forcing your beliefs on others'
**And you aren't forcing your belief on others when you KILL and EAT them? At least PETA hasn't hurt or killed you at all. They only used WORDS!! Is it wrong to 'force' anti-child abuse beliefs on a man beating a child by stopping him? Or should we respect his 'personal choice' to beat up a kid? Hurting and killing others is NOT a personal choice to respect. As compassionate civilized people we have the RIGHT to try and stop people from harming others.
'You must not realize how half of what you consume or wear is made and probably don't want to know how it derives from animals.
So stop being such a hypocrite. '
**Are you against murdering humans? If so, you must not realize how ost of what you do/consumer indirectly kills people through pollution and destruction of environment or harms people through worker abuse. So stop being such a hypocrite.
Do you see your own hypocrisy? Do you see the fault in your logic? Unknowingly indirectly harming others is NOT the same as deliberate harm and killing. Driving cars makes people sick and kills people. Does that make it okay to run over someone on purpose? You may not know about the blood in some plywood, but everyone KNOWS meat is animal flesh and that animals must be directly murdered for it. THAT IS deliberate killing for unnecessary pleasure.
Sounds like your missing the beef!
'we are supposed to be a CIVILIZED and COMPASSIONATE society.'
We are SUPPOSED to be
I have yet to meet a perfect human being
For those of you who still don't know that HSUS and PETA kill more animals than any other shelter check it out. No it wasn't because the animals were not healthy, but because they think all domestic animals should die as that is what they deserve.
Animal Rights Activists pretend to care about animals but in reality they actually care very little about humans and animals. They want to be and act superior to people who do eat meat. Why, because they think themselves better than animals and animals eat meat. To prove they are better they don't eat meat. The goal of liberating animals results in the end of several species of animals. Because they believe domestic animals cause global warming and compete with humans for food, what better way to clear the earth of domestic animals than to liberate them. These are the animals that use humans for protection against predators. I have seen the dogs in tribal villages trying to survive off the garbage of humans. No thanks.
Animal rights activists want all domestic animals to die off and they want no conservation of any species. They want no vaccines to prevent humans from dying. They want no medical research except on humans. So, no medical care for animals, thus, rabies will once again become the scourge of the planet. It is already rearing its ugly head in every community that has enacted mandatory spay and neuter. They want no predator control. Predators will be allowed to overgrow until they kill off all of their food supplies then the predators will die off. What animals what will there be left to observe from a distance? They want no insulin for diabetics- it comes from animals. They want no meat for children with gluten sensitivities, thus these children will be allowed to suffer a slow death. They don't know or care that 1 out of every 5 humans cannot exist on plant protein. They hide the fact that extreme vegetarian diets kill. Saturated Fats are traditional fats and have been eaten by humans since time began. Less than 25% of the plaque in arteries is meat based, the other 75% is composed of vegetable fats. One doesn't find carnivores dying from heart attacks or suffering heart disease. Now that we have introduced a lot of vegetable oils into our diets heart disease has skyrocketed! Why? Because saturated fats are stable fats, they don’t oxidize and vegetable fats are easily oxidized. Polyunsaturated vegetable fats are one of the greatest contributors of heart disease. Not only that but they also greatly contribute to increased cancer, immune system dysfunction, damage to the liver, reproductive organs and lungs, digestive disorders, depressed learning ability, impaired growth and weight gain.
The human body cannot maintain health without certain vitamins, minerals and amino acids that come only from meat. It's unfortunate, but massive egos will stoop low enough to sacrifice the health of expectant mothers and babies and children, as well as the long-term health of loyal followers, rather than adjust to the moderate stance taken by the very gurus they cite as their own sources for restrictive veganism that will eventually lead to serious deficiencies, disease, and accelerated aging. See Chet Day's website on how strict vegan diets kill.
Sadly, many deficiency problems remain undetected until irreparable damage has been done.
And for those who base their health decisions on the Bible... yes, Genesis 1:29 ('Behold, I have given you every herb-bearing seed... to you it shall be fore meat') held true for Eden, but humans were driven from the Garden, so it makes scriptural sense to adhere to Genesis 9:3 when God says, 'Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.' God meant for us to eat from both the animal and vegetable kingdoms.

PETA has gone too far.Jan 11th, 2008 - 19:08:56
I don't advocate animal abuse and have even made past donations to PETA. But all that ended when I received a pamphlet from PETA stating that one should not take their children fishing because 'hooking a fish and reeling it in causes much anxiety and stress on the fish'.
Good grief. If God, or mother nature, had not wanted animals to eat other animals, then there would be no carnivores on the planet.
