Hong Kong girl, 2, survives eight-storey fall
Jul 17, 2007, 5:25 GMT
Hong Kong - A 2-year-old girl was being treated in a Hong Kong hospital Tuesday after surviving a fall from an eighth-floor balcony when a flower bed broke her fall.
The toddler had been left sleeping alone in her home in a high-rise apartment block while her mother and five-year-old sister went to visit neighbours on Monday, police said.
She woke up and, apparently looking for her mother, climbed a chair to get out onto the balcony and then toppled through railings to the ground below.
A police spokesman said the girl fell directly onto a flower bed and soft soil which appeared to absorb the impact of her fall and save her life.
The girl, who lives in Hong Kong's urban Shek Kip Mei district, was being treated in the city's Prince of Wales Hospital Tuesday. The extent of her injuries were unclear.
The 32-year-old mother of the girl, who is divorced from the girls' father, was treated for shock after returning to her flat to discover the accident.
Child concern groups have pressed for police to prosecute Hong Kong parents who leave young children home alone for negligence after a number of fatal accidents involving falls from high-rise blocks in recent years.
