Police shocked as Lithuanian woman autopsies dead neighbour
Feb 20, 2007, 15:02 GMT
Vilnius - As police officers in the small Lithuanian town of Juodupe arrived to process a case of death in the home, they found the 64-year-old deceased already professionally prepared, Lietuvos Rytas newspaper reported Tuesday.
A neighbouring woman, who had trained as a coroner's assistant, had already carried out an autopsy on the body and removed its organs.
'There were scalpels and other equipment found, as well as a plastic bag containing organs,' a spokeswoman for the district of Rosiskis confirmed to Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
There was 'no indication of unnatural death,' she said.
Lietuvos Rytas did not publish any photos of the scene, but quoted the neighbour as saying, 'I only wanted to help the family save money on the restoration of the body.'
In Lithuania, bodies are often laid out for days for the relatives.
Apparently the shocked police officers had to accept a loophole in the law and could not take any legal action against the woman.
