Police find 113 pets in 37-square-metre Hong Kong apartment

Hong Kong - Police found 113 pets crammed into iron cages and plastic boxes in a tiny Hong Kong flat after neighbours complained of a strong smell, a news report said Friday. The menagerie in the 12th floor, 37-square-metre flat included 31 cats, 10 dogs, 13 birds, 26 turtles, a rabbit and 32 hamsters, one of which was dead, the South China Morning Post reported. No one else appeared to be living in the flat in Hong Kong's densely populated North Point district when police broke in Thursday, the newspaper said. Most of the animals were fed and were in reasonably good condition, though the flat reeked of animal waste. The pets were seized and taken to government kennels. Police told the newspaper that they were looking for a woman seen by neighbours going in and out of the flat wearing a face mask who appeared to be feeding the pets. Pet ownership in the city of 6.8 million has boomed in recent years, and a new law has been introduced making animal cruelty punishable by fines of up to 25,700 US dollars and three years jail. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
