Free hugs for all in German capital
Dec 3, 2006, 3:17 GMT
Berlin - An offer to hug all and sundry in the German capital Berlin found few takers early Saturday, with most pedestrians giving the male and female huggers on a city square a wide berth.
But the huggers insisted they had broken the ice as the day wore on. When the day drew to a close, one woman who had organized the event boasted, 'I personally hugged about 100 people.'
The 'free hugs' campaign had spread to Germany via the internet after the success of an Australian video on the Youtube video consolidating website in September. That video shows a man wearing a 'Free Hugs' placard as he walks up a street and hugs strangers.
Some 17 men and women set up their Berlin 'Free Hugs' post next to stalls selling Christmas decorations and gifts on Alexanderplatz, Berlin's biggest square.
An internet forum, the Hospitality Club, had billed simultaneous hugging Saturday in European cities including Dusseldorf, Lyon, Warsaw and Helsinki.

Former U.S. President Clinton is a skilled and magnanimous hugger. The man is charismatic. He should have been invited to the hugfest and it would have garnered much more publicity.
Next time.
