Washington - Authorities in Phoenix, Arizona are dismissing a rumor that two rattlesnakes were released in a theatre as a hoax related to a recently released movie about snakes getting loose on a plane and attacking passengers.
The Arizona Republic reported Wednesday the police believe the snakes were not intentionally set free in the theatre but instead slithered onto the grounds.
A 25-centimetre rattlesnake was found Friday in a hallway of the AMC Desert Ridge 18 theatre. Earlier in the day, snake handlers had been called to remove a serpent from the parking lot.
There had been rumour swirling that pranksters released the snakes in the theatre to coincide with the debut of Snakes on a Plane. The film plot involves an assassin who releases a crate of snakes on a flight over the Pacific Ocean in an attempt to kill a witness to a crime.
Diamondback rattlers are common in the desert area surrounding Phoenix. The critters can grow longer than 1 metre and can deliver venom capable in some circumstances of being fatal if the victim is not treated.
