Directed by Joe Kelly and narrated by Peña, “You are My Sunshine” tells the story of a young girl’s journey to a very special place in East Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, where Hispanic children from less fortunate circumstances are given a beacon of hope and a safe place to dream, learn and become successful educated adults, the Salesian Boys & Girls Club.
It’s also a special charity that is supported by A-listers like Mark Wahlberg and Michael Bay.
Established in 1966, the Salesian Boys & Girls Club of Los Angeles – located within walking distance of more than 13,000 elementary, middle and high school students – has served this part of Los Angeles for kids age 6-18 years.
But who ARE the Salesians?
This is a charitable organization founded by an Italian Catholic priest, Fr. John Bosco, (Don Bosco).
He began his work in Turin, Italy (mid-1800s) by gathering poor boys and young men that had no place to live and little education. He established a place called an oratory where these young people could gather and call their home. He then founded the Salesian Society, made up of priests and brothers. It was named after St. Francis de Sales – known for his kindness and simple spirituality.
With the help of Sr. Maria Domenca Mazzarello, he founded a society for women, the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, also known as the Salesian Sisters.
Don Bosco died in 1888 and was canonized a saint in 1934. The Salesian Society has been known as the Salesians of Don Bosco ever since.
