"Jim Carter" (born 19 August 1948) is an English actor.
His film credits include "Shakespeare in Love", "Brassed Off", "The Little Vampire", "Ella Enchanted", "Richard III", and "The Madness of King George" and Detective Victor Getz in the film "The Thief Lord". He plays John Faa in "The Golden Compass" (2007), the first film in the adaptation of the "His Dark Materials" trilogy, and also stars in "House Of 9" as The Watcher.
Television credits include "The Singing Detective", "Lipstick on Your Collar", "Arabian Nights", "The Chest", "Cracker", "Red Riding" and the "Hornblower" episode 'Duty'. He also plays Captain Brown in the five-part BBC series "Cranford" (2007) and Mayor Waldo in the US miniseries "Dinotopia".
Carter is married to actress Imelda Staunton, with whom he has a daughter named Bessie born in 1993.
