Gayle King Biography

Summary

"Gayle King" (born in Chevy Chase, Maryland) is editor-at-large for "O, The Oprah Magazine" and is the best friend of Oprah Winfrey. She has previously worked as a television news anchor and talk show host. King was also instrumental in the planning and creation of the Legends Weekend.

Biography and Career

King grew up in Bethesda, Maryland; born 1954. Her father was an electrical engineer and her mother was a homemaker. She graduated from the University of Maryland in 1976 with a degree in psychology.

King then moved to Kansas City, Missouri where she was a reporter and weekend anchor at WDAF-TV. In 1981, she was hired as a news anchor for WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut, where she worked for 18 years. In 1991, King briefly cohosted an NBC daytime talk show with Robin Wagner called "Cover to Cover" until it was canceled. In 1997 she was offered her own syndicated talk show "The Gayle King Show", which was later canceled due to low ratings. King joined "O, The Oprah Magazine" as an editor in 1999. She has also worked as a special correspondent for "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "Good Morning America". In September 2006, King began to co-host "Oprah & Friends" on XM Satellite Radio.

King was rumored to be considered as a replacement for both Star Jones Reynolds (in 2006) (... more) and Rosie O'Donnell (in 2007) (... more) as a host on the "The View", but neither of these came to fruition.

Personal life

She is the mother of two children. Her daughter, Kirby, 21, and her son, William, 20, are both currently in college. King lives in Connecticut.

In the August 2006 issue of "O, The Oprah Magazine", Winfrey explained that 'people sometimes misunderstand her close relationship with King' and that the two of them are 'as one soul in two bodies, when we are together the world feels right.'

Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King use the August issue of O Magazine (the theme of which is 'Best Friends') to proclaim, once and for all, that they are not gay. Says Oprah: "I've told everything there is to tell. All my stuff is out there. People think I'd be so ashamed of being gay that I wouldn't admit it? Oh, please." Gayle Replied: "...I used to say, 'Oprah, you have to do something. It's hard enough for me to get a date on a Saturday night. You've got to go on the air and stop it!' And then you realize you can't really stop it." Adds Gayle: "I have to admit, if Oprah were a man, I would marry her."
