Penelope Cruz steals Scarlett Johansson’s Cannes thunder

Noticeably absent at Cannes was actress Scarlett Johansson, who missed her opportunity to appear with director Woody Allen and costar Penelope Cruz of the film, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” at the chic French film festival.

The reason? Diva-like demands by Scarlett, claims The Daily Mail.

Allegedly the film studio balked at the star’s requirements for her appearance at Cannes Film Festival to launch “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, which also stars Oscar winner Javier Bardem.

Penelope Cruz and Rebecca Hall, costars, made up for it by taking the red carpet by storm and stealing the limelight.  Cruz has never looked better.

What did Johansson miss?

Apparently a rare ten minute standing ovation from the black-tie crowd.

The Daily Mail reports it was just as well the American actress stayed away: “Nobody cared she wasn’t there”, said one well-heeled and connected New Yorker.

“The movie belonged to Penelope and Rebecca anyway with great help from Javier,” the New Yorker added to the Daily Mail.

Allegedly the French offices for Warner Brothers Films, distributors of Vicky Cristina Barcelona in France, wrangled for weeks to appease Johansson’s demands, to no avail.

What the Mail contends is that the studio did offer to pay for “flights, hotel, provide a limousine, arrange for designers to show her gowns and for her to share hair and make-up designers with Cruz and Hall.”

Not good enough. Johansson wanted her own make-up consultant at a cost of 5,000 Euros a day.

The hotel was an issue too, Scarlett wanted a further hotel from the hubbub.

Cruz and Allen were reportedly happy close to Cannes and the action of the festival.

This has caused some potential bad blood for Allen regarding his favorite muse of late.

“Also, I think, while Woody’s terribly fond of Scarlett, he was a little upset that she wasn’t being a team player”, a film executive told the Daily Mail.

“That said she has agreed to support the movie back in America and we’re all delighted about that,” the Mail source added.

The movie features two Americans, Johansson and Hall, who summer in the Spanish coastal city of Barcelona where they meet Bardem, an artist and his volatile ex-wife, played by Cruz.
