New York: On Golden Pond closes today after 93 performances.
Its star, James Earl Jones, could not recover soon enough from his bout with pneumonia to rejoin the production so the provisional closing notice that was posted on June 21st stood.
“The entire On Golden Pond family is heartbroken to close this production prematurely,” said producer Jeffrey Finn in a statement, “and it’s especially disappointing that James Earl Jones won’t be with us for our final performances. Unfortunately, when we take a hard look at the financial reality of running several more weeks without him, closing is our most responsible decision. We all wish James Earl as swift a recovery as possible.”
The play saw a drop in ticket sales after Jones missed performances.
After 48 summers on Golden Pond, Norman and Ethel Thayer open up their home to their grandson, who grows older as they grow younger again. The play was nominated for a 2005 Tony for Best Revival of a Play and Jones was nominated for Best Leading Actor in a Play.
