WINDSOR, Nova Scotia (UPI) -- Nova Scotia is testing a "smart card" aimed at helping gambling addicts control themselves when faced with video lottery machines.
The card allows gamblers to pre-set a daily, weekly or monthly limit that cannot be exceeded. Its use in the city of Windsor is now voluntary, but by this fall the lottery terminals in Windsor will respond only to the card.
One bar-owner told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. that he would rather see gamblers bet small amounts twice a week than blow large amounts of money in one go.
But Manning MacDonald, a member of the legislative assembly, called the cards "the crack cocaine of gambling." He said the best way to help addicted gamblers is to get rid of the lottery terminals.
If the card is successful in Windsor, its use will be expanded to the entire province.
