Washington - Barack Obama was projected to win Oregon's Democratic presidential primary over Hillary Clinton late Tuesday, according to US television networks.

Official results gave Obama a lead of 60 per cent to 40 per cent for Clinton, with 30 per cent of precincts reporting.

Obama had been favoured by opinion polls in Oregon, which is home to more affluent, left-leaning and university-educated voters that have typically picked the Illinois senator.

Obama earlier Tuesday took an insurmountable lead in delegates elected in the five-month-old intra-party contest. But he remains short of the 2,025 total delegates needed to seal his candidacy for the November 4 presidential election.

Clinton Tuesday claimed a convincing victory in Kentucky's primary, beating Obama by 65 per cent to 30 per cent.
