Washington - US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will undergo surgery to repair a broken elbow suffered after she fell while walking to her car in the State Department's basement, a spokesman said Thursday.
A date for the surgery has not been set but it will take place next week, State Department spokesman PJ Crowley said, adding that it remained to be determined how it will effect her schedule and planned travel.
Clinton fell Wednesday afternoon while heading to the White House. Her right elbow was treated at nearby George Washington University Hospital and she was working from home on Thursday, Crowley said.
She cancelled all of her public events for the day, including an appearance with actress Angelina Jolie to mark World Refugee Day.
Clinton was due to travel to Trieste, Italy next week to meet with the Group of Eight (G8) foreign ministers and attend a conference on Afghanistan. She was also to travel to Greece to attend the June 27-28 gathering of Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
Clinton announced Wednesday she planned to fly to India in July.
'Once she comes through surgery, we'll have a sense of what the impact, if any, will be' on her schedule, Crowley said.
Clinton, who is right-handed, is eager to get back to work but will be assessed on a 'day-to-day' basis, Crowley said.
