I don't understandMar 28th, 2009 - 20:54:11

you mean the President is not going to do a fly-by and put a friend with no experience in charge of fixing things??? This is confusing and yes this river does in fact flow north to Canada.

Yet another demonstration of competenceMar 28th, 2009 - 23:43:30

Step One is to recognize that a problem exists - something it took days for Bush to get around to.

Step Two is to handle emergency conditions by supplying personnel and material to deal with it - this requires a President standing up and leading in terms of both policy and commitment. A photo-op on a rubbish heap with your arm around a fireman, and a rabble-rousing one-sentence wrap-up, is not leadership. Bush simply did the job as President that he was elected to perform; but in a perfunctory was, as with Katrina.

Giuliani, on the other hand, was quickly knee-deep in the NYC details, and reassuring the public. Rudy's best moment; and he deserves credit for it. Jindal did likewise in Louisiana right after Katrina; but then his recent remark on 'something called volcano research' shows him to be shallow in terms of the knowledge required to lead.

For Jindal - here's his 'volcano research' in action:

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Alaska's Mount Redoubt has erupted again, spewing an ash cloud 50,000 feet up into the air. The Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage says the volcano had a significant eruption at 1:20 a.m. Saturday. The ash is expected to move north toward the Alaska Range, missing Anchorage which is about 100 miles from the volcano.

The observatory says after the eruption, it detected strong seismic activity lasting 20 minutes or more followed by an hours-long low-level tremor. Since the series of eruptions began Sunday night, the volcano has had about a dozen bursts. The last time the volcano erupted was during a four-month period in 1989-90.
