Miami/Mexico City - Hurricane Omar was threatening Caribbean islands Wednesday, with sustained wind speeds of around 143 kilometres per hour.
According to the Miami-based US National Hurricane Centre (NHC), Omar was 'strengthening over the northeastern Caribbean sea' as it moved north-east and continued to drop heavy rains over Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. It was located 375 kilometres south-south-west of San Juan in Puerto Rico.
'Omar is forecast to move through the northern Leeward Islands late tonight (Wednesday) and early Thursday,' the NHC said.
The storm was a category-one hurricane on the five-category Saffir-Simpson scale, but it was expected to reach category two 'by the time it reaches the northern Leeward Islands.'
The NHC warned that heavy rain associated with Omar could produce flash floods and mudslides on Caribbean islands, which could also be exposed to dangerous coastal surge.
Omar is the 15th storm and the seventh hurricane this year in the Atlantic.
