Caren Z. Turner, a Democratic fund-raiser, a devout supporter of Hillary Clinton, and a lobbyist with a 25-year Inside-the-Beltway career.
Now Turner, who shuttles between Washington and her home in Tenafly, may include this entry on her political résumé: defector to Republican John McCain.
'I am not comfortable with Obama,' Turner said in an interview with The Record last week.
Turner, who began this year as a member of 'The Group,'' an informal committee of Hillary Clinton's top New Jersey fund-raisers, is now a member of Together4Us, a group of disenchanted Hillraisers who recently sounded out Carly Fiorina, a top McCain adviser.
Barack Obama, she believes, benefited from Democratic Party nominating rules that disenfranchised voters in Florida and Michigan and gave disproportionate clout to states with caucuses. He benefited from the 'misogynistic' Hillary-bashing and did nothing to stop it.
A broken party and doubts about Obama has led Together4Us to take a serious look at McCain. The organization, meanwhile, is demanding a high-profile role for Clinton at the Democratic National Convention and an overhaul in the party's nominating process.
Here are excerpts of her interview:
Q: What did you think you would accomplish by meeting with a McCain representative?
The people involved in Together4Us have a general discomfort with the way the Democratic process and the Democratic caucus system went down, with the Florida, Michigan representation, with apportionment, generally.
I think we also have a great discomfort with the misogyny that was expressed by the media during the entire election and the deafening silence by the DNC and the Barack campaign in the face of such denigration of women generally.
Q: Can you give me some examples of the misogyny that most angered you and your colleagues?
MSNBC was the worst that got me. The most was the Chris Matthews interview or discussion where he said, 'Let's face it. I'm going to be blunt here,' he says. 'The only reason she became a U.S. senator is because her husband messed around.' She is a Yale Law graduate, She is a brilliant woman. She is enormously talented, and that is just horrific.
Q: You mention his lack of protest or his standing up to denounce misogyny in the media. Is that it? Is that the sole reason, at this point, why you are not comfortable with Obama?
This is another example of a less-qualified male getting a promotion over a more qualified female. I have been in Washington and doing federal legislation longer than Senator Obama has. That's not very comforting. Frankly, from a war perspective and a national security perspective, I don't feel safe with him.... I'm not comfortable with the people who he has chosen to affiliate with – the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, et cetera.
Q: Why not support Obama if the differences between Hillary and Obama, on most issues, are marginal?
His positions seem to shift.... He has shifted on campaign finance and he has shifted on FISA [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act] ... and he has shifted on a whole bunch of things, so I don't know where he is.
I can tell you where McCain is. I can tell you where Hillary is. And for good, bad or ugly, I know where they are. I can agree or disagree, but I know where they are.... Him? I don't know where he is. We've got a moving target here.
Q: Some Democrats might suggest that by backing McCain, you are backing the continuation of Republican rule that they believe has brought discredit and damage to this country.
I would say that all Democrats are not created equally and all Republicans are not created equally. George Bush and John McCain are not the same. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are not the same. And so to label Bush as the same as McCain is sloganism. John McCain is about as centrist a Republican as one can find.

ATV/Zogby Poll Toss-Up! McCain 42%, Obama 41% as Undecided Voters Increase
Obama loses support among his strongest demographic groups
UTICA, New York – A national Associated TV/Zogby International telephone poll of 1,011 likely voters conducted July 31-Aug. 1 finds Republican Sen. John McCain taking a razor-thin 42%-41% lead over Democrat Sen. Barack Obama in the race for the U.S. presidency.
The margin between the candidates is statistically insignificant, but demonstrates a notable turn-around from the Reuters/Zogby poll of July 7-9 that showed Obama ahead, 46%-36% in a four-way match-up that included Libertarian candidate Bob Barr of Georgia and liberal independent candidate Ralph Nader. McCain made significant gains at Obama’s expense among some of what had been Obama’s strongest demographic groups. For example:
* McCain gained 20% and Obama lost 16% among voters ages 18-29. Obama still leads that group, 49%-38%.
* Among women, McCain closed 10 points on Obama, who still leads by a 43%-38% margin.
* Obama has lost what was an 11% lead among Independents. He and McCain are now tied.
* Obama had some slippage among Democrats, dropping from 83% to 74%.
* Obama’s support among single voters dropped by 19%, and he now leads McCain, 51%-37%.
* Even with African-Americans and Hispanics, Obama shows smaller margins.

Consider the latest 70 million barrels ploy.
AP reports: 'In a reversal, Barack Obama proposed Monday that the government sell 70 million barrels of oil from its strategic petroleum stockpile to help reduce gasoline prices.'
But wait — we have heard nothing from Obama the last 6 months other than a few million additional barrels per day would not make any difference at all. In contrast, 70 million taken out of the reserve equals less than 4 days consumption by Americans, so how can that suddenly matter when a million per day from ANWR or off the coasts and the shelf supposedly would not? Aside from the bad precedent of tapping into a reserve that may some day be necessary — given the prairie-fire nature of the Middle East— how can this short-short term fix (10 weeks of ANWR) be of any value other than to deflect charges Obama's remedies will do nothing to lower gas prices?
What we are seeing is a sad sort of desperation brought on prior sanctimonious assurances for months that 'wind, solar, and green' would get us out of this mess — not a transitional period to alternate energies based on more domestic production of clean coal, nuclear, and domestic natural gas and oil to avoid giving ever more trillions to suspect regimes.
Think of it — in less than a week we are told the answer to high gas prices is to fill our tires with more air and thereby avoid all new drilling, and now to tap into the reserve to get 4-days worth of additional oil. Examine the crazy logic: for months we were not supposed to drill inside the US or its waters to get new supplies, but now we are supposed to pump from limited, finite supplies.[...]
At some point very soon, millions of Democrats are going to wake up from their hypnoses and realize that they have spurned a veteran Hillary who would have waged a tough, professional campaign in a sure-win Democratic year for a rookie Senator without any record or experience. Again, McCain is the only Republican candidate this strange year who could have won, and a green Obama may be the only Democratic who could have lost.

A Letter to The United States Congress and to The American People
Americans have lost their way by choice and coercion by those that wish to have it all. Those Americans that have plenty are not bothered by the confusion and rape of the land and its people. The ones that outnumber the wealthy are the ones that suffer in America. The idea of a Republic of America was originally thought to be a perfect form of government, but the ones that made the choice to write on paper their ideas for a perfect form of government, were themselves imperfect, which did not make for a perfect document. The document called the Constitution is a promise to Americans to protect and to serve our Nation with truth. That has not happened, thus the discord within our nation to Americans.
Our Nation, our Homeland has been sold, raped, and ravaged by many outsiders and insider traitors, that have allowed our eagle our National symbol to be locked in a cage with little sustenance. Our Star has been buried in the sand with the trash of other nations.
This is not acceptable, and will be resolved. Our current Congress has forsaken our nation by giving little and taking so much for themselves and their financial supporters. Congress has allowed Capitalist Businesses from within and out to take over our Nation and rule by the power of selfish money and lies.
Our Great and once powerful Military is also ruled by those that give false and deceptive orders and not true commands. They, the soldiers of our fortunes are engaged in ambiguous battle campaigns under False Flag counter intelligence propaganda. Human lives on all sides are dying for the few that have lost their way thru choice.
Our President, our leader of our Nation has with his advisors and financial empire brokers, reinforced the ultimate crime to humanity by lying to himself, his family and his country. Our business leaders have lied to our Nation and prostituted our ingenuity to others for unnatural profit.
There are too many Americans that have some or little or none, and that Ladies and Gentlemen is not acceptable. Congress and others have failed to provide even the basics for our Nation to thrive. Too many selfish secrets, which many are known amongst a few is tearing our Nation and Planet apart. And allowing those that know what lies behind the looking glass, to control the masses at will.
There is too much advertised hatred and racial prejudice that is fed by ignorance and choice. Religions have taken front seat to freedom and truth, thus confusing those that wish to know the truth by self choice.
On September 11, 2008, in Los Angeles, California, United States of America, we Americans can and will make a choice to free our Eagle from its cage of captors, allowing it to be stronger and fly higher than ever before, and unearth and restore our Star to its rightful brilliance from the sand of trash of other Nations, and take back our country from those that have stolen it from us all. We have learned from the past, and we have learned from the present, so now we will make a choice to either continue with America as is, or Change it to a True Republic that truly represents the sincere interests of it people and other Nations.
