Then, he saw a window to run for President and did not hesitate: He put together a first rate fund raising scheme, got his name out, played on his novelty as a black candidate in a party who just loves image, offering a fresh image, even if he's politically identical to his opponent. In essence, he learned what Bill Clinton taught in his run. Too bad his opponent didn't.
